I feel the distinction between, say, an average web app vs. games is important here. Most web apps fulfill similar functionality in very similar ways. That's true of some game systems, but not games as a whole. To gain the fine control you need, sometimes reinventing the wheel is your only option.

I'll chime in here: I'd argue that viewing code as a "solvable math problem" sort of puts the cart before the horse. The "artistry" in code (architecture, naming/style conventions, consistency across a codebase, etc.) matters because humans can't maintain code they don't understand.

Screenshot of a terminal window with the output of the "cloc" command, a program that counts lines of code. The output shows a sum of just over 100K lines across Beef, Python, Text, TOML, and GLSL, with roughly 95% being Beef.
My proprietary 3D game engine just passed 100K lines of code! Note that although the table shows "C#" as the dominating contributor, I'm actually using Beef.

It's funny to think that I started speedrunning with Ori and the Blind Forest in March 2015, before Discord existed, and to wonder how we communicated without it. Now, in January 2026, I'm thinking about the same question.

Window resizing falls into this same bucket (mundane video game features that are complex to implement).

Overwatch announcement is part intriguing and part questionable. Plenty to be excited about, but bluntly, competitive matchmaking is so bad that it overrides everything else. Difficult to contemplate returning until that's fixed.

Minnesotans, you're making your Wisconsin neighbor proud. Don't let these fuckers have a moment's peace, and never forgive the people who allowed things to escalate this far. They're evil and deserve to be treated as such.

Shame. I've used Razer mice and keyboards for years. Because of statements like this, I'll be strongly reconsidering those purchases next time.

Been a pretty heavy Blender user for years and I have to look up how Knife Project works every time I use it. I always try the obvious approach first (select object A, select object B, enter edit mode, knife project) and of course that fails.

One of my proudest stats is that I've never touched AI in any fashion. Like, I've literally never opened ChatGPT once, used an AI bot on a service website, played with an image generator, nothing. I recognized AI as a blight immediately. I think I'm allowed to brag about that, if just this once.

Overwatch matchmaking has always been deeply broken, but anecdotally, it's actually getting quite a lot worse in recent seasons. Longer bouts in winner's vs. loser's queues, more lopsided matches, and more toxicity. Somehow, this is what Blizzard wants for its competitive ecosystem. Wild stuff.

A small demo rendering two point lights within a cube-shaped room using distinct, primitive colors on each wall. Falloff from the light sources causes obvious visible color banding.
Same scene as the previous image (two point lights rendered within a small, cube-shaped room with colored walls), but this time dithered to give perceptually-smoother gradients. Some banding is still visible, but the effect is significantly reduced.
I recently learned how to dither to reduce color banding. Try using arrow keys to swap back and forth between these two images and it should be obvious that the second (which uses dithering) renders gradients that are perceptually MUCH smoother. The technique is magical and basically free.
