If NYC can't activate no-brainer rail service on pre-existing ROW bc of NIMBY opposition then it's honestly time to pack it in and call the ballgame.

If you're threatening to leave a city because you don't like the new mayor, that says more about your privilege than anything else.

Almost nobody I know can pack up and relocate on a whim. People have jobs, homes, families, friends etc.

The entire NYC candidate dropout drama of 2025 is literally a case study for how Rank Choice Voting can increase voter satisfaction w/elections.

Hoping there is a journalist that will write this story.

The entire argument that Sliwa and Adams should drop out would be moot with RCV.

RCV is good because it's just a better way to capture voter preferences.

Well, at least everyone agrees that NYC should have Rank Choice Voting for the general too, right?

"All the news fit to print."

Elites in media and politics continue to completely misunderstand the urgency and seriousness of the moment we're in. NYC has serious housing/transportation needs.

In the era of the climate crisis, politicians campaigning against bike lanes aren’t fit for office Amid the climate crisis, politicians campaigning against bike lanes β€” as in Montreal municipal election campaign β€” aren’t fit for office.

Also in an era of worsening urban traffic, urban pollution, urban noise, exploding public costs, competition among cities, & not nearly enough space in cities.

Once again, the main day of Tea Party protests had about 300,000 nationwide, but saw endless coverage.

The No Kings protests had about 7,000,000 nationwide, and many media outlets reacted with a yawn.

No Kings was nearly 25x as big as the Tea Party but the Tea Party got 25x the attention.

Loved seeing another Oonee Pod in the wild! We need more secure bike parking all around our cities. In addition to better bike lanes, minimizing bike theft is another key to getting more people out cycling. Note @thewaroncars.bsky.social Advertisement!

If we are being honest, there are even fairly urban communities like Newark and The Oranges that are 1 hour to the CBD…few young professionals would ever consider living those areas while working in city.

The @rpa.org has been all over this but unfortunately it’s just a pipe dream. Most of the rail infrastructure is already built too.

The two states and three railroads just can’t get along.

Adding to my list of books!

But yes, clearly NYC metro would grow more if people could afford to live here. The region follows no central transportation and housing plan though.

... the problem is that we don't build transportation anymore and we make it impossible to build market-rate housing, and we've stopped building public/affordable housing.

No planner is surprised by how expensive cities have become, this trend-line has been apparent since the late 90s.

21.10.2025 22:36 β€” πŸ‘ 3    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

Look at former mayor of LA Villaraigosa. He decided that he would make it his mission to build more transit in LA.... a city that made it literally illegal to build subways.

...and he just did it. If a mayor really had the political will they could change the dynamic.

21.10.2025 22:34 β€” πŸ‘ 5    πŸ” 1    πŸ’¬ 2    πŸ“Œ 0

Yep. This is what inspired this tweet. Someone said "what power does the mayor have over affordability."

City planning is a mayoral responsibility! Nobody exerts control over the housing and transportation in a city than the mayor (and city council) those are the biggest drivers of affordability!

21.10.2025 22:27 β€” πŸ‘ 3    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

Conversely, if your city is not affordable, it is not well planned.

Well planned cities should have enough housing and transportation for their populations to live affordably. Housing shortages and expensive transportation are *city planning* issues.

Changing Lanes, a new film by Brooklyn-based cinematographer Ben Wolf premiered this past weekend at the Architectural & Design Film Festival. It does an amazing job of situating the recent struggle over the McGuinness Blvd *road diet* in Greenpoint within the history of making cities car dependent
