I re-ground a couple of my gouges to new profiles today. Thought I’d take β€˜em for a spin. Rummaged through the inventory and found a piece of Helene Sourwood. First time turning Sourwood. No issues. Decided to push it and went thin, roughly 3/32’s but not as consistent as I would have liked.

Bradford pear is an invasive species and doesn’t display the character of say cherry but it turns beautifully wet or dry. It is a treat to work with. Though not particularly glamorous it can be quite handsome.

There are several rewarding moments while turning but this part is the most fun. For those interested I’m using a 5/8” bowl gouge with a 40/40 grind, lathe at 1000rpm and f:8. The bowl blank is about 11”. #bowlturning #turningbowls #woodbowls #turningwoodbowls #woodturning #turningwood

Cherry wood shallow bowl. 12” x 3.5”.
The piece of wood this was turned from was pretty funky and this piece came close to ending up in the designer firewood bin a couple of times. Sleeping on it can help. #woodbowl #woodbowls #woodenbowls #woodturning #turningwood

Another hollow form. This one inspired by early Native American pottery. The wood had been sitting in the scrap pile on the side of the house for a couple of years. Approximately 6.5” x 6”.

Being able to turn hollow forms opens up a whole new world of design and shape when turning. I recently received a one week full scholarship at Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts to attend Kevin Jesequel’s course Hollow Forms. I am absolutely thrilled.

With a wall thickness of about 1/8” it’s a little delicate and when placed in the sun light in the correct orientation it becomes translucent and glows. 10.25”x3.5” ambrosia maple. #woodbowl #woodbowlturning #turningbowls #turningwood

8” x 3.5” walnut bowl. This blank developed cracks in two places at the rim. I stabilized them with crushed soapstone and CA glue. I originally intended to make this a three footed (tripod) bowl. However, after looking at it I decided to leave it as is.

Ambrosia maple bowl approximately 13.5(?)” x 3.25(?)”.
There is a small stabilized crack on the rim. Some time ago a fracture like that would have been turned away making for a shallower bowl. These days it’s a feature.

Small Bradford pear hollow form.
The wood comes from an invasive species. It’s quite lovely in the spring for a moment but that’s about it for looks. It does however turn like a dream.

Nesting cherry, live edge bowls. I don’t do much live or natural edge turning but it lends itself to turning while the wood is still wet. Approximately 10”. Windfall from hurricane Helene. Given to wood donors.
