Any bird experts know how many of these things are tagged? See its left foot.

This red-tailed hawk hung out just outside my apartment for a half hour this morning. Such a beautiful creature!

Looks like the West is next in line for potentially historic March heat, as @edwardsanthonyb.bsky.social points out today. The Euro’s extreme forecast index the next 15 days roasts California to the Four Corners and adjacent areas. Fire season is closer than you think.

It's too early to draw conclusions about fire season, but snowpack is a key indicator of wildfire risk for forests.

Low snowpack + warm nearly everywhere, variable precip

As Alan notes, a broad swath of the West has faced record warmth this water year (since Oct. 1), with record low snowpack in many areas.

At the same time, a Pineapple Express may take aim at the PNW as the high-pressure system over the Southwest guides moisture from Hawaii toward WA/OR.

A warm atmospheric river-fueled storm like this would follow on the heels of feet of snow this week, raising flood risk the week of March 16.

The Climate Prediction Center forecasts β€œmaximum probabilities favoring above-normal temperatures,” (exceeding 90%) in the Southwest, including Southern California, from March 16-22.

Frankly, it's one of the strongest signals I've ever seen for anomalous warmth at this range. Not normally a fan of showing deterministic weather model runs at this range, but there's strong consensus for a high-pressure system to develop over CA and send temps soaring to daily/monthly records.

Striking signal for much above-normal temperatures across California, the Great Basin, northern Rockies and Desert Southwest from March 15-20. Temperatures will be more typical of summer than early spring (potentially 25 degrees above normal) in many areas and monthly records could be shattered.

Yes, two weeks ago, but was subsequently followed by a spell of much above-normal temperatures, including a rainstorm.

Also, snow depth is essentially zero in sunny areas. Shaded spots holding onto a few inches.

Big waves on the west shore of Lake Tahoe as the fourth day of a relentless east-northeast wind event continues. These winds are also responsible for the anomalous warmth in the Bay Area (and much of coastal and central CA). Also spot the lenticular clouds over Heavenly Mountain Resort. #CAwx

Late last month, strong winter storms brought multiple feet of snow to the Sierra Nevada mountains.

Recent unseasonably warm temperatures in the region have led to significant snowmelt in the mountains.

Our Next Santa Ana wind event will be in full swing across #SoCal by tomorrow morning for the usual areas. Another warmup over the weekend as Temperatures get up into the 80's along Coast/Valley Locations. Our dry weather pattern expected to continue for at least another 10 days. #CAwx

if the earth spins at 1,000 mph why do we bother with airplanes, why not simply go up in a helicopter and wait a bit and then land somewhere else

Bay Area in for weather whiplash as dry winds wipe away humidity The Bay Area’s stretch of fog, humidity and drizzle isn’t over just yet β€” but a sharp midweek shift is about to change how it feels outside.

Humid, foggy and, at times, rainy weather that dominated the Bay Area lately is about to undergo a major change. Offshore winds beginning Wednesday will wipe out fog and whisk away puddles from roadways and hiking trails, as well as moisture from humans’ skin. Lip balm and lotion will come in handy.

Got about 5 seconds of clear skies for every 10 minutes of fog here in SF but the breaks offered a glimpse!

If a lunar eclipse happens in the night sky but there’s fog obscuring the view… does it even cast a shadow?

Here's the latest Bay Area weather forecast for tonight's total lunar eclipse The next total lunar eclipse that will be visible from the Bay Area doesn't occur until 2029.

If you're trying to catch tonight's eclipse from the Bay Area, head to the hilltops. Fog is likely to form along the bay shoreline and Pacific coastline, which could fully obscure visibility of the celestial event.
