Picture of Esmée staff doing some planting with text: In 2024, we offered £5,000 in wellbeing awards to 52 of the organisations we grant fund to help them prioritise the wellbeing of their staff and volunteers.
A year later, we surveyed the recipients to learn how they used the funding and what impact it had. The findings in this report are based on feedback from the 22 organisations that responded to the survey.
Text: Impact of the wellbeing awards. 91% of organisations used the wellbeing award to introduce new or different wellbeing initiatives.
The flexibility of the funding was highly valued, with each organisation tailoring their approach to suit its unique needs and ways of working:
3 in 4 survey respondents used some or all the award to support connection through away days, wellbeing retreats, and social and team building activities.
All organisations reported improved team cohesion and relationships because of the award.
3 in 4 survey respondents used some or all the award for individual care work
Over half highlighted the positive impact of the support on individual wellbeing, with access to tailored offers and personal wellbeing budgets leaving staff feeling empowered, valued, and optimistic.
The support was credited with strengthening team dynamics and enhancing workplace culture, which in turn boosted productivity and resilience while reducing staff burnout and absences.
Text: Recommendations for funders. Provide long-term, ring-fenced funding for wellbeing, not just in times of crisis
Treat wellbeing as a core cost.
Provide unrestricted multi-year grants with an annual wellbeing component.
Reflect wellbeing in funder behaviour and practice.
Offer guidance on effective and sustainable wellbeing strategies.
Provide access to wellbeing practitioners, mentoring, courses, retreats, or healthcare packages.
Quote from a survey respondent: Multi-year grants with a wellbeing component, or unrestricted funding that allows us to respond to emerging mental health needs, would make a significant difference in building a resilient and supported team capable of delivering high-impact, compassionate work.
Our new report, Supporting organisations to prioritise wellbeing, shows that compassionate, people-centred workplaces are more resilient, sustainable, and better equipped to support their communities💓

People seeking asylum in the UK deserve safety and dignity
At Esmée Fairbairn Foundation, we have been giving grants to organisations welcoming and supporting refugees in the UK for 30 years.
Today we remain committed to migrant justice - to a society where migrants, refugees and people seeking asylum can all live in safety, in a place where their rights and dignity are protected.
This week's statement on the government’s asylum and returns policy will take away support for people who are destitute, and the changes to family reunion and removal will have a disproportionate impact on women and children.
Refugees have been living and thriving in communities across the UK for much longer than the 30 years Esmée has been supporting them. Migration is a vital part of UK life, and safe and legal routes should be a priority for those most in need of asylum and refuge in the UK. We will continue to support organisations working for this.
People seeking asylum in the UK deserve safety and dignity 🧡
Read our statement reiterating our support to organisations welcoming and supporting refugees in the UK. We also share responses from the sector about how the government's proposals on the asylum system will impact people.

Banning people from work has never made sense. The House of Lords couldn't understand it, and we don't either.
The Government is prepping asylum reforms RIGHT NOW. They must hear voters want an end to this absurd ban - not more irrational hostility:

Asylum hotels and military barracks are awful places to live for people fleeing torture.
We didn’t rely on them to house asylum seekers five years ago – so why is our government using them now?
It’s time to change this and take action on asylum accommodation.
