A gull flying, seen from behind, wings spread wide; one goes off the edge of the photo. In the centre, the white feathers of his tail are fanned out, and beneath them are the pink feet, dangling. He just left a rock, seen below, covered with barnacles and dark algae. Background; blue sky, blue hills, clouds.

A sandy beach. The outgoing tide has left waves in the sand. And spotted here and there are the "cake decoration" fecal castings of lugworms; round, coiled, tube-like masses of clean sand. The worms in their burrows swallow the sand, digest the organic detritus, and poop out the rest onto the surface.

Three sea anemones just underwater. They have short pink, white and cream tentacles around the mouth and a yellowish-green, knobby base. One has a mouth full of sand; another has a piece of seaweed. They're on sand with bits of seaweed and barnacle shells; there's a green blade of translucent sea lettuce.

Top view of a birds' nest fungus. Like a tiny, beige bowl with a brown rim. Inside the bowl are the spore containers, called periodoles. These look like sugar cookies, plain, without icing. Bonus: on the left side of the fungus, there's a small black fly with grey wings. Beneath, an old 2x4, split and stained, with tips of cedar needles.

Pale pinkish mushroom, probably Mycena sp. Straight, smooth stalk, rounded cap with a hint of gills showing through near the rim. It stands surrounded by fern-like moss, possibly a step moss. With a blackened Douglas-fir cone at the bottom, black twigs behind the mushroom.

A small lake at the end of winter. Blue water, blue sky, white clouds. And in the middle of the lake, a tiny islet where a short tree stretches out its winter-bare branches. On the islet, on the shores, and even in the water, dead grasses, a warm brown, wait for spring. Evergreen trees, hemlock and Douglas-firs, line the far shore; behind them can be seen the tops of blue mountains.

A rock outcropping with patches of moss fills the bottom half of the photo. Above, against a clear blue sky, a hemlock branch reaches out from the right. A pine tree fills the left side. Below, on the rock, there's a crawler: a remote-controlled all-terrain vehicle, an adult toy. It has attempted a slope too much for it and has fallen and lies, wheels up. (Not to worry; the owner is on the rock above.)

A large, old stump, well rotted, on the forest floor. The wood is reddish, crumbling, covered with patches of various lichens. On top, there's moss. And on the sides and top, the stump supports evergreen salal bushes, huckleberry bushes, and several hemlock saplings. Besides, unseen, a community of critters, spiders, etc. On either side and behind the stump there are the trunks of young Douglas-firs; thin, straight brown trunks. Greenery behind the stump is mostly salal; in front, it's moss.

On a bed of moss, one single Reindeer lichen, Cladonia portentosa, stands out: almost pure white, with twice- or thrice-forked tips. One stalk is broken, showing that it's a hollow tube. Between the branches, there's a fruiting body of another Cladonia. Off to the right there are two Ladder Cladonias, a pixie-cup lichen, unique in that from the centre of the cups, sprout new stalks, each with its own cup. The cups are light brownish with reddish rims.

A hillside covered with dead or dormant bracken ferns; when they froze they turned a bright red. A small evergreen to one side provides contrast. Behind the ferns, yellow-green moss carpets the rock. In the distance, there is dark, misty forest, evergreens in various tones of green, spring-like bright green to deep, dark, blue-green.
