ledge August 12, 2025 Iris van Rooij This week I was looking for info on what cognitive scientists mean when they speak of ‘domain-general’ cognition. I was curious, because the nuances are relevant for something I am researching at the moment. To my surprise and dismay, I hit upon this ScienceDirect page that ‘defined’ the concept as follows: I thought, Huh?! This is definitely not how we — cognitive scientists — use that term. Then I saw the last sentence, “AI-generated definition”, and I realised what went wrong. This was AI slop. Not only that. It was AI slop on ScienceDirect, a “premier platform for scientific, health and technical literature” (emphasis in original).

So Elsevier / ScienceDirect is now actively and intentionally including machine-generated pseudoscience on its pages next to the work of academics

I don't get the reticence. I understand FFG aren't particularly keen on social spending but they recognise we need to transition and no-one will complain about spending on warm homes, transport and cheaper energy. (Except shady lobbyists)

If only there were a state with a budget surplus it needs to spend on infrastructure...

We are dealing with a decades-long legacy of poor building standards, cold homes, and a transport system built around cars.

Turning this around is not going to be cheap, but  it's probably one of the best investments we can make into the future.

To be a humanist isn't to be stubborn and dug-in about what you do or don't believe is true. Go with the evidence.

When you find out you are wrong about something you believed true, take the approach of an experimental scientist and not that of a debate team. See it not as failure, but learning.
