The western horse seen here occupied the Santa Monica Basin, where Rancho La Brea (tar pits) are located. The land was not all too different to contemporary California; coastal, but predominantly chaparral scrubland, with sparse foresting. (3/3)

They lived during the Pleistocene epoch, in the late Quaternary period of the Cenozoic era; at a time when the continents were rifted apart once more, however horses could travel across a land bridge between North America and Asia - known as the Bering Land Bridge. (2/3)
