‘You said you owed me,’ he continued. ‘Are all of your relationships this transactional?’ This isn’t a relationship, she wanted to counter, but bit her tongue. He raised an eyebrow. ‘Yes, then, I’m assuming? Okay. Fine. It was nice to meet you. Get home safe.’ Rey’s eyes prickled. She shoved her hands into her pockets, pulling her jacket tight around her shoulders. It wasn’t fair. He didn’t know her like that. Nobody knew her. He, like everyone else she’d met in her life, was supposed to pretend nothing was wrong, let her slip away and forget they’d even crossed paths. He wasn’t supposed to get the last word on who she was. ‘You’ll miss your bus,’ he prompted. It was getting hard to breathe. Her throat felt tight. ‘Did you want that cup of tea?’ he jerked his thumb over his shoulder. ‘The kettle’s just boiled.’ She nodded. ‘Okay.’ Ben pushed his chair back, reaching for a jar behind him. ‘How do you take it again? Milk? Sugar?’ ‘Just milk,’ she said, and her voice was thick. ‘Fine. You can sit down. I really don’t bite.’ The chair creaked as Rey sat down, then scraped against the floor as she tucked herself in. It all felt too loud. With her hands flat on the table, she looked at the fraying cuffs of her jacket until her vision went blurry. Ben slid a steaming mug of tea across to her. ‘There you go,’ he said. ‘Tell me if it needs more milk.’ ‘I’m so lonely,’ she said. He sighed. ‘Yeah, me too.’
