I wish more people appreciated these things about video game development
and I can certainly say spl3 innovated in so many ways, not only in the maps but thatβs for another slop thread

And I find it even MORE impressive that the people making these maps were new developers! That is so insanely cool to me that they got to experiment, refine their skills and produce something entirely different to 1 and 2!
Again itβs extremely easy to do the same things but innovating is hard
Not even mentioning how aesthetically beautiful the splatoon 3 stages are for complex stories they tell about splatsville and the world of splatoon in general

It takes a lot of balls to admit you were making mid, but it takes 9 billion more balls to admit and improve.
The maps now in 11.0 are mostly good, they do a lot of interesting shit without relying on gimmicks and can use map geometry as extremely distinct elements for their design
But I admire that they took steps to change the maps while keeping their idea of splatoon 3 intact, it was the easy way out to just go back to the completely safe tried and true design choices 1 and 2 set, but instead the team developed their ideas and made them into more objectively good maps.

Splatoon 3 is really really cool to me for a lot of decisions it took, and maps is a big one
But I donβt want you reading to take this as me defending mediocrity or whatever buzzwords we want to use
Specially when the developers understood it wasnβt universally liked and at times bad
Which is a really novel direction imo, specially cuz it stands out in the industry at large
Chaos is a lot of things, donβt use it as a magic argument center point for what your image of chaos is! Chaos is freedom and also forcing people to clash together
Another point I want to tackle that pisses me off is when people use the gameβs theme of βchaosβ to argue it should give as much βlibertyβ as the original 2 games did
I find that to be bs
The game philosophy around the map changes being more limiting is around forcing head on clashes
Itβs really hard to explain this to people who donβt appreciate these things but seriously try and imagine the universe where 3 just did the same things as 1 and 2 and how boring that would be.

If Splatoon 3 decided to make maps like Splatoon 1 and 2, not only would that be 10 years with the same fundamental design choices, it would just be boring as shit
I 100% rather creative people create new things than to keep innovating a safe formula, being inoffensive is easy-

And me personally coming from playing a lot of shooters with a lot of sequels, I find this really fucking cool!
Splatoon 3 was the game that received the 10th anniversary and has almost been running for half the duration of the series
which is something extremely commendable in my opinion, taking a series of huge risks across the board, one of those changed sectors being the scenario design
If you played 1 and 2 you know that splatoon 3βs maps are genuinely so different, good or bad the map design is changed by-
I feel like we really donβt give this praise to splatoon 3 as much as we should
The praise in question is for being able to iterate so much in so many aspects despite being a sequel game
We really undervalue it now but splatoon 3 changed so much while staying familiar-
