Interesting thing about the UKRI funding diagram: the research councils are invisible with their programmes now (maybe?) inputs to funding bucket outcomes. Disciplines not the organising principle, but pieces of delivery channels. That’s the enormous structural shift. Universities better catch up

Surely the point is that it’s learning? It’s not optimal now, but given capacity for consolidating all published knowledge it’s accelerating in utility. Usefulness isn’t the issue, imo, regulation is.

Does this mean “England’s”?

According to the @financialtimes.com 35% of compensation goes to the legal company representing the students. The legal firm also say they have >190000 clients signed up… that’s the end of the sector as we might know it. Lucky lawyers.

Came across this scene today. The sign was helpful.

We can’t complain about bureaucracy/ over work/ low success rates and maintain the present system - productivity, transparency, fairness and removing the air of mystery around grant success can only happen with radical change. I also agree this is the right direction, and it’ll hurt short term.

Years ago a university I worked for surveyed international students to see what they valued most about studying in Scotland. Apart from my inspirational teaching (!), the top answer was “clean air”. We take living in the UK for granted (or worse, some denigrate the uk): it’s amazing.

My morning beach run is still as usual along a beach, but that’s not the North Sea. And it’s not freezing.
