It definitely isn't perfect, but at least that's something that kind of works in my head

The way I think of it is one before and then one after. So V is 5, and I is 1, 4 is 1 before 5, therefore IV. Since 6 is one after 5, you get VI. This also applies with other positions like 9,10,11 (IX, X, XI respectively)
