I’m not going on this diatribe to make anyone feel like their critiques of the series aren’t valid, if anything the takeaway from this thread should be that the series thrives on critique and the way we interact with this title will inform the design philosophy of the next.

New horizons isn’t going to resonate with everybody, but if you look around enough, all of the games in the franchise are pretty divisive, all for very different reasons, and maybe that’s one of its charms.

So I think that’s where a lot of the disconnect comes from - everyone has their favourite animal crossing title with their favourite game exclusive mechanics but the series shifts and changes in response to its audience with each new release, and I honestly think that’s a good thing

And if we go back further than new leaf, to the original animal forest, wild world and city folk, you have what are essentially very different games - new horizons is definitely an iteration upon new leaf, but new leaf and new horizons are in entirely different categories to the rest of the series.

The reason I say that is because, if you go back to new leaf, it actually has a lot of similar life-sim issues to new horizons. Repetitive dialogue and a lack of interactions was one of new leaf’s biggest issues and I do actually think new horizons improves on this.

As a long time Animal Crossing fan who has sunk several thousands of hours into every title, my overall impression of new horizons is actually very positive and I do honestly think it’s a highlight in a franchise with a very good track record of quality games.

So from a business standpoint in particular, it does make sense to take that and build on it, and I think it was successful. I do think they overestimated just how many people were actually using save editors a little bit, leaving some veteran fans feeling out of place with the genre shift.

Something I will praise about new horizons is that it does take what people were doing with save editors and gamifies it into a core feature, the prevalence of save editor usage in the community during the new leaf era does suggest that people wanted more control over the appearance of their island

I’m not saying that to diminish how people feel about the life sim aspect taking a bit of a backseat, I think a perfect world would be both aspects of the franchise complementing each other, which I think new horizons attempts but doesn’t quite nail.

Tbh I think it’s pretty obvious why Nintendo pivoted towards a design-oriented play style for animal crossing new horizons given how the animal crossing new leaf community evolved and what was generally prioritised by players at that point - particularly wrt the way save editing tools were used

sometimes you have to do things that are scary

and so, it begins (i am scared of blender but im doing it)

My overall impression is positive, I’m not going to sit here and tell you it’s the best game ever, but it is far from the worst, and is actually very enjoyable. If anything, I feel a little bad for it because it appears that the game is the current target for racist tourist bashing

I love a lot of the mega designs, I think the only one I don’t really like is pyroar but pyroar was always gonna be a hard sell for me cuz I didn’t like them in the first place - if you’re expecting me to blast mega starmie I won’t, the context provided for it’s design justifies it entirely imo.

The main story is serviceable, nothing groundbreaking but it works as a vehicle for everything else. I love a lot of the little lore drops that answer so many questions about the previous games as well

Character design and scenario writing is a 10/10 for me, every main character has strong visuals with strong intentional design and their characterisation is consistent and feels natural - this is not a surprise because the past 3 generations of the games have been consistent in this regard

imo the game is fine - I can understand critiques about the over reliance on pbr textures giving the world a bit of a flat look in some places and making certain texture mapping issues very obvious, I also agree that it’s weirdly paced, but these things don’t exactly impede much on my enjoyment

I think it’s really weird that so many negative user reviews of pokemon legends za start with valid, if overblown, criticism but always end up going on a massive racist rant towards jacinthe at some point like I’m SO sorry the pretty black lady made the game unplayable for you

discovering that a lot of the weird negative twitter attention pokemon legends za is getting happens to be from engagement grifters looking for their scarlet and violet moment

I 100% completed Silksong on console and now I’m doing it again on Steam and then I’m going for my steel soul and speedrunner achievements, I’m so normal about this game
