This is because Faust is a child from the Nazi "Lebensborn" program. He is the "better child" his father had with a stranger. His father brought him home without permission when Esther fell gravely ill, and his mother was furious about it, but there is nothing she can do...

Little Faust does not fully understand what is happening; he simply walks up to the coffin and abruptly says, "Goodbye, Esther!" As he is led back to others, he notices the hateful look in his mother's eyes.

The story is about Faust Engel, the son of a Nazi SS officer, who witnesses his parents arguing over whether or not to place the Nazi eagle on his sister Esther's coffin during her funeral.
