every time there's a freakout about AI privacy I see tech people rolling their eyes at the inability of the average person to parse what's worth getting upset about, and idk maybe get pissed at the companies reassuring everyone their data is safe when they mean "a stranger will see you fucking."

having written about how banning web scrapers from a code forge i host made it usable again and saved ~60€/y in power bill, let me tell you:

you cannot fathom the offloaded cost of GenAI on small web hosts. it is a veritable distributed denial of service to the entire web. Every web admin sees it.

this is something that had been bouncing around in my noggin for a while now, but it had been especially amplified after the release of THE FILES, and the way trans women had been talked about in them, like goods.
like goods that are conveniently easy to handle, yet exotic for their pleasure.

you become an object in a trade, an exotic treat for the wealthy to enjoy and profit off of.
another thing that happens is that the moment they find someone who can take an inspiration from the original that is white and easier to digest, the credit is often shifted to them.

It's a form of objectification, in a sense. the moment you thrive as an artist of any kind, who happens to be part of marginalized category, you are deemed as an exotic curiosity, your work is one of a kind because it presents specific culture that had been supressed.

It's always been extremely on the nose with capitalists, they love the shit marginalized people make. it brings juice to an environment that's devoid of inspiration.
But the moment these groups gain a semblance of autonomy over their lives and perhaps even thrive, it's a threat.

So, artificial scarcity had always been a pain in the ass when it comes to goods. something that always sucked.
but I can't help but draw the parallels between the desire for art and queer people and the culture they bring.
they are also actively suppressed, therefore made more scarce. exotic.
