You need to be sure you're listing the actual date and then show your pov, that this happened back in Nov, but nothing's changed. That helps you retain your credibility so people don't blow you off as the person who cried wolf.

That happened a couple of months ago, why bring it up now?

Many homes not in what should have been designated no-build areas could have been spares by using our knowledge and expertise in designing and implementing burns and other land stewardship

And yeah many homes can be protected from fire by putting Indigenous fire knowledge to use. Many burns around Malibu were stopped by pearl clutchers who didn't want the smoke. We see how well that worked out

Really, please remember you're talking with a California Indian who learned these things literally at her grandparents knees.

My ancestors knew where to put dwellings and one thing we learned after 14,000 years is that some land will never be suitable for building. My elders tried to warn people not to build in those extreme strips but you see how that's working out.

I have a friend who worked a fire where the Palisades Fire happened about 40 years ago. He said that the hilly area was like a chimney, and was surprised to see homes spring up again. There are indeed parts that no matter what you do are gonna burn and those areas shouldn't have homes.

I have trouble walking more than a block or so, so I need some other way than walking to get around and be able to grocery shop and such. My BIL was without a car and had a lot of issues trying to bring food home without incurring taxi or uber expenses. I'm just explaining some of the issues.

Residents should be asking their elected officials to made changes then. And not take no for an answer. There is such a thing as elections.

And you can steward those lands without endangering homes. The mile or so around villages was burned the most, then trade routes farther right. And how do you think we knew all this? By observation

Ah you do realize you're talking to a member of one of those Cali tribes who did steward lands using fire right? And that at one time, some were shot dead for trying to do burning

I was thinking about this and one solution is for homeowners who employ domestic staff is to require them to supply housing on their estates. Build them an apartment complex so they have somewhere to live.

Also, yes fires are a problem because the US government didn't heed tribal calls to effectively steward the lands, the forests and yes, the chapparal. So the land has become so choked with detritus and overgrowth that yeah, fire is a worry. And the floods that follow.

well, I beg to disagree. Some of my old Spanish land grant cousins have had homes there for six or seven generations. The ones who didn't lose their land or homes to American skullduggery that is.

So just 'build more' always sets off alarms in my half-crippled aunty brain. Thinking of the needs of us mobility limited peeps and not just as an afterthought. You'd be surprised how many times I've made that point to ableists who think everybody is just as healthy

I figured that's what that is. But building density also needs to be thoughtful, as in not just tiny studios but a mix of family housing, senior housing and single adults. And build for different life states, I've noticed that a lot of affordable housing neglects the needs of folks with disabilities

You could try for more density though I would think without impacting the view scape.

But more than three stories may not be practicable. Santa Barbara is a notorious quake zone. Not to mention cutting off the view for the residents behind a mid rise building. (Not all of whom are Uber rich, some of them inherited their homes over generations)

Hair, makeup and couture (not to mention fear of losing access) trump competence and ability to call out BS I'm afraid.

In 2019, @panic.gay invited me to give a Nerd Nite talk on fighting giant robots at the bottom of the Mariana Trench, and that's now just basically my career, I guess.

But that's just four major types. The spectrum within those subtypes is still there if I read it correctly.

This news is honestly a little bit challenging; there are six people in my most active group chat and it will lose a lot of the fun of the exercise if we have to sort ourselves into just four boxes
