Relying on ChatGPT to teach you about a topic leaves you with shallower knowledge than Googling and reading about it, according to new research that compared what more than 10,000 people knew after using one method or the other.

I think this may be an opportunity for google to finally create a pathway to monetize scholar?
I tried it, and so far really nice in terms of lit review. ๐ฅ

I did a small test on the assertions made in my advisorโs new paper on industry influence in tech research (arxiv.org/abs/2510.19894 ; great read btw), and what paper they cited for those assertions/claims. And check if scholar labs was able to find those papers given the claim.

That said, specificity of the claim matters I think. The more specific the claim (i.e. less choices to search from), the better.

For example, for the query: โIs there a paper that claims systematic reviews funded by the soda industry are more likely to find no clear link between sugar and obesity?โ It was able to find the paper cited in the above paper for that context (see doc).

Discourse surrounding โAIโ these days often feels like a guy showing you his shovel and you say, โthatโs a nice shovelโ and he says โI am going to perform surgery on my mother with this shovelโ and you say โOh God please donโt that is not what a shovel is for.โ

This.
Much of the "AI Scientist" community focuses on an instrumentalist rather taylorist approach to science. What about the goal of "knowing" and "understanding" the world?

Fully agree with you..and to clarify, I wasnโt arguing that we lack agency. Only that we are having to debate these questions reactively because someone has already prototyped worlds nobody really asked for. But thatโs the reality of any tech rn. And all the more reason to question it.

Three schematic diagrams. The first illustrates selective publishing of internal resection, the second selective causal focus, and the third selective access and funding for researchers.
1. We ( @jbakcoleman.bsky.social, @cailinmeister.bsky.social, @jevinwest.bsky.social, and I) have a new preprint up on the arXiv.
There we explore how social media companies and other online information technology firms are able to manipulate scientific research about the effects of their products.

Debating "should this exist?" was simply a retrospective exercise.
The ethics of it all is all just a commentary on an operational landscape that's already here. We are simply educating ourselves.
What a bizarre world.
