This kind of โ€œnewsโ€ from Anthropic always reminds me of this cartoon/meme.

Saw this metaphor by Terence Tao floating around about one of the drawbacks of using AI to solve hard math problems, and kind of have the same feeling for โ€œvibe scienceโ€ or โ€œfully automated scienceโ€ line of research in #AI4Science.

Amplifiers of Epistemic Posture Essays and writing on AI

I'm a cognitive scientist with an interest in epistemic vigilance, and this essay that's been going around gave me pause.

I don't think it's straightforward to apply the concept of epistemic vigilance to interactions with LLMs, as this essay does.

Screening, sorting, and the feedback cycles that imperil peer review The process of peer review is vital to contemporary science, but is also under enormous strain. This study uses mathematical models to dissect the threats to the long-term viability of peer review, su...

We used economic models based around screening games and the market for unpaid labor to highlight a meltdown cycle threatening peer review.

Living the metascience dream (or nightmare) with AI for science What happens when we go from replication crisis to robustness extremes?

AI makes continuous reproducibility and robustness testing trivial. What happens to science under new levels of scrutiny and stress-testing by default?

Some thoughts on how this could play out, informed by watching open science play out over the last decade.

Einstein - AI Homework Agent Einstein logs into Canvas and does your homework automatically. He has his own computer โ€” he can watch lectures, read essays, write papers, and participate in discussions.

Check this: companion.ai/einstein

Einstein, an AI agent student that logs into canvas, watches your lectures, does your assignments, and gets your degree for you.

Keeps your brain from accidentally learning something.. ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘

I don't take issue in using #AI to help w/ writing, but is anyone else facing the issue that #LLMs are increasingly sounding so similar that you gotta actively adjust your writing to not sound like one.

Thinking if that meant my writing was average... ๐Ÿค”

Many are appropriately outraged by Altmanโ€™s comments here implying that raising a human child is akin to โ€œtrainingโ€ an AI model.

This is part of a broader pattern where AI industry leaders use language that collapses the boundary between human and machine.

Have you noticed how โ€œquietlyโ€ is quietly becoming the new โ€œdelveโ€ of #LLMs.

Paratactic micro-sentences are everywhere.

No connectors.
No flow.
Just line breaks pretending to be insight.

Kind of cringe. Sorry๐Ÿคฎ

This is a new phenomenon and business model exploiting gaps in publishing. The cartel uses fake names to produce AI-written or plagiarised papers. Reference lists contain 100s of paid entries. If papers are retracted, no real authors are punished, and citations still count, even from retracted papers

โ€‹I donโ€™t think using large language models is unethical. I also donโ€™t think itโ€™s a good idea to use a nail gun as a toothbrush, even if the nail gun company runs late night television ads that say โ€œmakes a great toothbrush!โ€

What happened to Science Goodreads and how do we rebuild it? A 65 million dollar question (at least) - CAIROS Blog The story of the rise and fall of Mendeley

1/ Finally wrote up โ€œThe Story of Mendeleyโ€! Most people know the tool, few know about its rise and fall. The Mendeley story provides important clues for how to build self-sustaining AND non-extractive knowledge commons, which is why I think it deserves more attention ๐Ÿงต

Hospitals here, including children's hospitals, are using AI transcription tools as well. Studies have shown they are inaccurate the majority of the time, fabricate content during silences about abuse and drug usage (what could go wrong!!!), and delete the original audio for "privacy" reasons
