05.03.2026 17:34 β π 774 π 142 π¬ 36 π 21So my advice would be: don't kick yourself for being hasty before. Treat review of prior work as an ongoing part of research, and look at it as an opportunity to find new clues.
05.03.2026 23:21 β π 3 π 1 π¬ 1 π 0Even when one has "done it properly the first time" it pays to review prior work, because you've learned more / found more records in the meantime. So many things become significant when you correlate records as a group.
05.03.2026 23:20 β π 2 π 1 π¬ 2 π 0Yes, thatβs true. Much of my research is for my Jewish family from the Russian Empire (mainly Ukraine), and those records have only become available this decade. One has to revisit websites and oneβs tree (+DNA) constantly to fill huge long-time family data gaps. Exciting but hard work!
05.03.2026 23:28 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Well said! Now, after 30ish years as a genealogist, I am kicking myself for unfocused research, lazy documentation, and too much haste in my analysis. I am trying to clean up my records and tree now, at a time when age & health keep slowing me down. If only I had done it properly the 1st time!
05.03.2026 23:16 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Sadly, I have done the same thing. Found a relevant document, recorded the specific info that I was looking for, and then stashed the image. In reviewing it, often many years later, I realize that there was so much more there that would have answered other questions. I was in too much of a hurry!
05.03.2026 23:06 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0I can read faded handwriting and old family documents because why? I've practiced. You can't learn how to do it yourself if you farm out the work to a computer. And if you've never done it yourself, I don't see how you can evaluate the output from a computer.

Such a great point, Jan. The OCR garbage that has been available for online newspapers for decades has never been reviewed or corrected, so every person who uses them for research has to make the same corrections or, worse, many will accept incorrect names or dates as truth. #genealogy

This is a profound continental divide. Canadians overwhelmingly view other Canadians, even those unlike them, as being good people. Americans, more than any other country, view their neighbours and fellow citizens as bad people. Anti-Americanism flourishes in the United States
