Krystyna Chojnowska-Liskiewicz (1936–2021), trailblazing Polish yacht captain who achieved the first female solo global circumnavigation in 1978 on Mazurek, earning her place as a maritime pioneer despite political overshadowing in later years. The black-and-white photograph shows her standing confidently on the deck of her yacht amid rigging and ropes, wearing a dark turtleneck sweater and a patterned headscarf, smiling warmly while holding a radio or some other device to her ear, with sails and mast elements framing the scene in the background.

Krystyna Chojnowska-Liskiewicz (1936–2021), pioneering Polish naval engineer and sailor who became the first woman to complete a solo circumnavigation of the globe in 1978 aboard her 9.5-meter yacht Mazurek, covering over 28,000 nautical miles in 401 days. The black-and-white photograph captures her sloop-rigged yacht Mazurek heeling gracefully on open ocean waves under full sail, with the mainsail and genoa billowing, a Polish flag flying at the stern, the hull painted white with a dark waterline stripe and "YACHT MAZUREK" lettering visible on the side, crew visible on deck amid rigging and equipment.

#OTD in 1976, Krystyna Chojnowska-Liskiewicz set sail from the Canary Islands.

She returned 401 days later on April 21, 1978, becoming the first woman to sail solo (w/stops) around the world. A circumnavigation of ~31,166 nautical miles.
