On 23-24 February 2026, record rainfall triggered multiple landslides in Juiz da Fora, Brazil. At least 54 people have been killed and 14 more are missing.

A new paper (Görüm et al. 2026) describes the 100,000 cubic metre 8 December 2024 landslide on the Güngören hillslope, which killed four people. The landslide was the result of progressive deformation, with final failure triggered by heavy, but not exceptional, rainfall.

News is emerging of a series of landslides triggered by heavy rainfall in Juiz de Fora in Minas Gerais, Brazil. There has been at least 20 different landslide events and 16 fatalities, whilst 45 people are reported to be missing. More rain is forecast.

There has been another large landslide in mine waste / tailings at the Morowali Industrial Park in Sulawesi, Indonesia, as per the video below. One person has been killed. Reports indicate this occurred at IMIP9, which is at [-2.8622, 122.1452].

A new paper (Valkaniotis et al. 2026) documents the extensive liquefaction induced by the 29 March 2025 Mw=7.7 Mandalay earthquake in Myanmar. Remarkably, this shows up in the daily imagery collected by @planet.com.

A new paper (Sana et al. 2026) describes the exceptional occurrence of landslides and floods in the 2025 South Asia summer monsoon, which killed over 2,500 people in India and Pakistan.

We also compiled a preliminary inventory of over 200 landslides along with other surface effects caused by the earthquake. Interestingly, despite there being some very large landslides, their areal distribution was considerably smaller than expected for an earthquake of this magnitude.

On 2 February 2026, a major landslide occurred on a cut slope on the Ionian motorway between Arta and Amfilochia in Greece. This failure appears to have occurred on a slope reinforced with rockbolts. No-one was harmed.

On 28 January 2026, a landslide at the Rubaya coltan mine complex in the Democratic Republic of Congo killed at least 227 people. It is likely that there were further victims, but the true cost is likely to remain undetermined.

Seven dead, 82 missing after landslide in Indonesia’s Bandung Latest disaster comes weeks after deadly floods and landslides left more than 1,000 people dead in Indonesia's West.

News reports this morning suggested that up to about 90 people may have been killed in a landslide in Bandung, Indonesia.
