Democratic societies rely on people like Jo being able to embark on public service unhindered by threats of violence and harm.

This anniversary is an opportunity to recommit ourselves to honouring her memory through our work.

Jo’s murder and the murder of lawmakers everywhere, including this weekend in the United States, are tragedies for our democracies.

In the wake of that murder, More in Common was established. We take our name from Jo’s maiden speech in Parliament where she said: “We have more in common than that which divides us”.

Nine years ago today, Jo Cox MP was murdered while she was representing and engaging with people in her constituency in Yorkshire in the North of England.

As we enter last few hours of polling a look at what we think *relative to current polling* might be 'good' or 'bad' night for each main party in terms of council seats (obviously objectively it is a bad night for parties losing lots of seats and good for those gaining).

research for @neunion.bsky.social finds Gen Z Britons aged 16-24 think social media has become more addictive, more negative and less safe for young people in last 5 years and by 3-1 they think social media does more harm than good for under 16s.

84% of Gen Z admit they bypassed parental restrictions on phone use, mostly by staying up late, but also for 1 in 5 through secret accounts or devices parents didn’t monitor.

Over half of Gen Z say getting distracted by social media stops them going to sleep, nearly half feel anxious without their phone and 2/3s reach for their phone when bored or uncomfortable in social settings.

1 in 10 Gen Z Britons say it would be impossible to quit social media, 2/3s would find it at least somewhat difficult. 4 in 5 would try keep their kids off social media for as long as possible.46% say their parents are worse at managing their relationships with phones than them

Those who got social media at a younger age are more likely to regret not waiting longer. Half of Gen Z Brits wish they’d spent last time on screens during childhood and a third wish they’d spent had waited longer before getting social media.

In fact most Gen Z Britons think that life would be better off for young people under the age of 16 if they didn’t have access to social media and rate it as the top harm to those young people’s mental health.

Over half of Gen Z say that smart phones and social media negatively affect their sleep and attention span. 4 in 10 say it negatively
affects their self esteem, mental health and work/studies even as 2/3s tend to say it improves their relationships with friends.

Obviously just one poll but beyond this i'm interested *if* there is an opportunity for the Lib Dems to make themselves as a repository for left liberal discontent with Labour as they did 2001-2005 or if their current seat profile makes that harder and Iraq was a unique factor.
