Journal to Eliza - The Laurence Sterne Trust
Laurence Sterne, vicar of Coxwold, celebrity author of The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, met, at a London gathering, Eliza Draper, who was visiting England from her home in India. Eliza was 23 and had married – at the age of 14 – Daniel Draper, an East India Company employee, a man 30 years her senior. It was an arranged marriage and they were not well-matched.
Eliza Draper, great love and muse of Laurence Sterne, was born #OnThisDay 5th April 1744 #OTD #LaurenceSterne #ElizaDraper Read more about them here:

Endless Journey by Tom Gauld - new green issue
NEW ISSUE in GREEN CARD
A new issue of the bestselling myriorama by Tom Gauld inspired by the works of Laurence Sterne. Twelve picture cards which can be arranged to form 479,001,600 different landscapes.
Myriorama, or 'Many Thousand Views' consist of numerous cards depicting fragments or segments of landscapes that can be arranged in a multitude of different combinations. This 'entertainment' for young ladies and gentlemen originated in France. The first English version in 1824 was a set of 16 cards which depicted Gothic ruins, castles, cottages, a lighthouse, a man fishing and a gypsy encampment. These landmarks had a backdrop of mountains with islands and a lake to add extra texture and depth.
Whenever the cards were taken out and arranged upon a table, they produced a landscape of harmony which was variable, compatible and satisfying to the user without being geographically identifiable. This first myriorama seems to have been an instant success and many varieties were created to satisfy the demands of the public.
The newly commissioned contemporary myriorama by Tom Gauld has many references to Laurence Sterne's writings and contains incidents and characters that may be familiar to the reader. He has ordered his drawings to allow an almost limitless variety of Sternean encounters to take place.
What a large volume of adventures may be grasped within this little span of life, by him who interests his heart in everything, and who, having eyes to see what time and chance are perpetually holding out to him as he journeyeth on his way, misses nothing he can fairly lay his hands on.
from 'A Sentimental Journey through France and Italy' by Laurence Sterne

Shostakovich’s surreal and brilliant first opera tells the story of a man who wakes one morning to find that his nose has gone missing
Find out more at http://www.roh.org.uk/thenose
Shostakovich was only 20 when he began writing The Nose, his operatic debut. He turned to a tiny short story by Gogol: an absurdist satire, where a civil servant’s errant nose launches its owner on a ludicrous battle against both nose and the authorities, as bureaucratic processes break down in the face of so unusual a problem. Gogol’s surrealist fable fired Shostakovich’s imagination, and he responded with a work of exuberant energy, full of musical jokes and grotesque parody – from the famed Act I entr’acte for percussion ensemble to plaintive laments, careening counterpoint, folksong (accompanied by balalaika) and rambunctious polkas.
Shostakovich finished the work in about a year, and in the following months gave successful performances of extracts from the opera. But it was to be another two years, in 1930, before The Nose was staged in full, by which time Soviet cultural climate had turned sternly against works of such perceived frivolity. The opera was quickly dropped from the repertory; but since its rediscovery in the 1960s it has steadily gained recognition for Shostakovich’s baffling, brilliant wit. This new production is The Royal Opera’s first. Artistic Director of Berlin’s Komische Oper Barrie Kosky directs, fresh from his triumphant production of Saul for Glyndebourne Festival. The Nose is performed in English, in a new translation by David Pountney.

Was fasziniert uns an Rätseln wie Kains Knochen so sehr?
