Yes that is very true! Plenty of areas could be considered as OECMs and Iceland’s fisheries management is good! But we can’t forget that we have signed the Global Biodiversity Framework and therefore need to get this number up to 30%, be it with MPAs or OECMs, to fulfil our commitments.

OECMs cover 1.6% of the Icelandic EEZ bringing this number up to… well 1.67%… out of 30%. But we are hopeful!

Who would’ve thought MPAs were the way to go for biodiversity AND fisheries?

Well we do. And that’s why we need to change the situation in Iceland. MPAs currently cover 0.07% of Iceland’s EEZ.

We are on a mission to get this number up to AT LEAST 30% 🌊🌍🇮🇸
