This aspect of Splatoon's design is the one thing that's always irked me. I don't think fixing it would solve the comp community's issues overnight, but I also think we'd be net better off if the in-game ranking systems encouraged behavior other than caring only about yourself.

Imagine if the X rank leaderboards prominently displayed the top 100 teams for the season in addition to the top players. Imagine if playing with a Squad was in the name of your team's rank for the season instead of the two hours you played. Imagine if the game itself got you invested in others.

I feel that if the games instead made a big deal of Team Leaderboards and ranks, and tied more of the long-term rewards into playing as teams, more players would enter the competitive community already in playgroups and teams, and being a team would be more normalized.
