We’re in the middle of autumnal woods and the leaves are falling. Our cat friend has been enjoying a solitary, undisturbed meander amongst the trees, savoring the sights, sounds, and smells, when a rather bold leaf has the temerity to land on and stick to the middle of his face. Such undignified effrontery! He is clearly quite consternated. A rather bemused little bird looks on from a safe distance in the branches above.

Rendered in black ballpoint pen & coloured pencil. The leaf is the only thing in the drawing that’s in colour.

Hark! What was that?!

Our feline friend has heard mysterious noises emanating from out in the garden. Were the sounds an ‘it’ or a ‘them’? She thinks she sees shadowy shapes dart across the lawn and slither through the shrubbery. The poor cat is trapped indoors. All she wants is to leap through that window into a moonlit landscape of wild curiosity filled with unknown and unseen excitements - and perhaps an exploit or two of good old mischief.

It’s nighttime and the crescent moon is out. A black cat sits in profile atop a classical plinth next to a leafy hedge. A paw is raised and in it stands a small cute bird, looking up at the cat. The cat is smiling in delight at it’s new found friend. In the background is a row of tall cypress trees. Rendered in dip pen & ink.

The trick is to sit patiently with your outstretched paw filled with nuts & seeds. (This is done outside, obviously.)
And also: don’t look hungry!

This drawing is a sequel to “The Forgotten Gardens” where we have a very curious cat who has wandered into an abandoned, seemingly derelict old English garden - a garden that appears to be haunted and more than a little spooky. As the cat carefully tiptoes through overgrown weeds and grasses it can't shake the feeling of being constantly watched - but by whom…..or what? The looming topiary in the foreground, shaped like a giant cat, seems particularly interested, but that can't be...right?

I've always loved old ornate ironwork, weathered gates, gardens left to their own devices, strange topiary...and all things eccentric.
And of course cats. Moody and atmospheric settings are hugely engrossing to draw - much more so than bright sunny days when everything's so very unmysterious (ho hum). This was based on a vague, fleeting image that darted through my mind whilst drowsily listening to Erik Satie's
'Gnossiennes'.

“Catterfly” (leptidea pussycaticus):
A very rare species, found in various parts of the world, but only on a breeding cycle of every 9 years. A favourite of lepidopterists worldwide.

A lone black cat wandering in a lonely old European park very late at night. The cat is emerging from the dark in the foreground into a circle of light cast by a tall curved lamppost in the mid-ground. The cat is casting long shadows, as is the ornate bench next to the lamppost. In the distance is a second lamppost leading into a dim pathway further into the park. In the left foreground is a dark, drooping tree.

This piece was rendered in black ballpoint pen on crème-coloured paper.

It’s nighttime in an atmospheric hidden alcove of an old park and a black cat is slinking across the top of an ornate park bench. Through the surrounding dense foliage lamplight shines upon the cat, casting the cat’s shadow along an ivy covered wall behind the bench.

I actually witnessed this scene on one of my many moonlit nighttime sojourns. The cat didn’t like my staring and quickly ran away. It is rendered in black ballpoint pen.
