Yes, when they were just getting into digital subscriptions. It was a marketing strategy. At this point in time, given the financial strains on legitimate journalism, they simply cannot afford such. (And 2010 was 15 years ago, now.) ;)

FWIW, there has always been a paywall for major newspapers, whether in print or online. It's called a subscription. It's how they pay their journalists to do the work that they do. Why we think everything should be free today, I dunno. Wanna work for free?
