Let there be light-activated arynes
Making these strained intermediates just got easier, thanks to new precursors that react in the presence of blue light
Let there be light-activated arynes!

Reminder that itβs the same program officers, same reviewers, same values, norms, and priorities. We still are our community no matter what they tell us who to exclude. We can still prioritize diversity, inclusion, equity, and access.

The Trump admin has cancelled the panels that approve NIH grants, & is also banning scientists from communicating with the public, attending conferences, and hiring.
NIH is the largest funder of biomedical research in the world. This will severely halt the development of many lifesaving treatments.

I have some data from University of Minnesota (so hundreds of students over multiple semesters). Definitely higher in ochem 1 (~15-30%) than ochem 2 (~5-15%), but NOT 50%!

Mentoring graduate students is hands down the most fulfilling thing I have ever done. That transition from undergrad to grad student mentality and skillset is amazing to see.

I don't see enough Black voices on this platform -- maybe I haven't found them yet? Let's try something together, if y'all feel like it:
- If you're a Black scientist on Bluesky, feel free to respond here and I'll follow you
- If you're not, please share the responses (and/or this post) to amplify

It's almost as if our broad network of policies disincentivizing immigrant scientists from attending schools here, staying on for jobs, and earning long-term status is a short-sighted mistake derived from a long history of xenophobia and jingoistic nationalism rather than rational national policy...
