COMMENTARY — A hodgepodge of thoughts as March comes in A few random, yet important, thoughts ... • Saturday, Feb. 28, was a great day for West Hudson. That afternoon, Michael Fernandez, the long-time owner of the Spanish Pavillion in Harrison, hosted an open house at the restaurant in honor of the 50th anniversary of its opening (it actually opened on Feb. 29, 1976.) Hundreds of his friends, family, patrons, etc., came by for a fun afternoon. Kearny Mayor Carol Jean Doyle presented Fernandez, his wife, Josie, and his mum a plaque to commemorate the special occasion. Congratulations, Mike and Josie, on 50 great years — we look forward to your summer celebration of the milestone.

On the same night, at the same venue, Kearny celebrates parade marshals & PBA’s finest On the social calendar in Kearny, there are certain days that serve as a reminder of just how much civic pride this town has. From events such as the annual senior citizens picnic, to the Passaic River Cleanup to the lighting of the Christmas Tree at Town Hall, there are days most people know about before the yearly calendar is even published — and make their way to witness or take part in these events. But two not-yet mentioned yet events that happen every year — the United Irish Associations of West Hudson’s St.

Area wrestlers win district titles, Kearny’s Pagan takes OW at District 9 With more than 30 this season and two district medals on his resume, it would be easy to think that Matthew Pagan entered this weekend’s NJSIAA District 9 Championships at Delbarton with nothing to prove. Kearny’s star junior felt otherwise. “I just was confident if I'm being honest, because I know how good I am. I know how much time I put in,” said Pagan. “I just walked around feeling like if I truly believe in myself, I'll just win.” “I know how good he is. I think it was more about proving to himself how good he is,” Kearny head coach Tony Carratura Jr.

Chaname breaks Lyndhurst scoring record as Bears reach semis Johnny Chaname remembers the nerves he felt as a sophomore before his first varsity basketball game. He also remembers the words of encouragement he received from senior captain Anthony Pizzuti. “When I first joined the varsity team, I told him that I was nervous because I was 15 years old, in my first varsity game. And I told him I’m nervous,” Chaname recalled. “And (Anthony) was like, ‘Just go out there and play. You made it this far for a reason and coach (Perrin Mosca) obviously wants you on the court, so he believes in you.’”

Whether it be fatigue, the cold winter weather, or the unconventional training that comes as a result of it, Iacono has noticed this part of the year, particularly around the group meets of the indoor season of when her performance seemed to tail off the most. “For me, the spring is when I usually do better,” said Iacono. “I usually increase my throws by more feet and have a better number in the spring compared to the winter.

MIGHTY QUINN In a few weeks, the United Irish Associations of West Hudson will march along in the big parade from Harrison Avenue, to Frank E. Rodgers Boulevard to Kearny Avenue. And this is a special one, without question. The first parade stepped off 50 years ago around this time. And equally special, the parade’s grand marshal will celebrate his 30th year as the president of the association — which is responsible for putting on perhaps the most important event all year long in Kearny, Harrison and East Newark. Selected to serve this year’s parade as Grand Marshal is Kevin Quinn.

Nutley boys bowling wins sectional title Nutley boys bowling coach Frank Sasso can remember the empty feeling his team felt 12 months ago when they left North Brunswick's Lucky Strike having suffered its only defeat of the season in the NJSIAA North Jersey, Section 2, Group 3 final to Delbarton. While that feeling stuck to this veteran group of Maroon Raider bowlers, it's one they were able to rid themselves of on Saturday. Fifty-two weeks after that deflating loss, Nutley again returned to the final at Lucky Strike, only this time, the feeling was one of elation as the Raiders defeated Chatham, 2-0, in the North Jersey, Section 2, Group 3 championship.
