I grew up in Catholic Ireland hearing endless stories of Stalin's Gulags, every library had a copy of Solzhenitsyn and its Koestler books about the horrors of Communism. The stuff coming out of the US right now, these innocent people being incarcerated in hell forever, needs to never be forgotten.

Book Review: ‘Careless People,’ by Sarah Wynn-Williams
“Careless People,” a memoir by a former Facebook executive, portrays feckless company leaders cozying up to authoritarian regimes.
Our critic Jen Szalai reviews the explosive new Facebook memoir by Sarah Wynn Williams: "Not only does she have the storytelling chops to unspool a gripping narrative; she also delivers the goods."

Sorry I missed this, frances! We were lucky - didn't lose power, unusually, and the worst winds hit further north. Phew.

Airports have to play a part too. Two years ago, at 5.30 a.m. in Dublin Airport Departures I saw a guy downing a pint - with three more pints lined up beside him. He was travelling with young children. Perhaps a restriction on booze pre-flight - or breathalyzers? @ryanairofficial.bsky.social

A friend of mine was just yesterday tagged in a bad review of her book. Baffling. How would this reader like it if someone gave her a public dressing down for her work?

I spoke to the Irish parents of Hisham Arwatani, the Palestinian-Irish-American student who was paralysed last month in Vermont in an unprovoked gun attack his mother, Dún Laoghaire-born Elizabeth Price, believes was caused by hate speech in the US.

“For many the truce is worse, because Palestinians get to die slowly and in silence.” Dr Refaat Alareer - RIP, my friend
Ceasefire? Yes. We need an immediate ceasefire right now in Gaza. But the blockade must be lifted. Refaat knew that being alive was not the same as living.
