Caro describes Moses as a fanatic and someone allergic to even the tiniest bit of scrutiny ever since his "idealistic" phase, so whether it is to reform government or build big things, Moses wanted power because power allowed him to remove obstacles. Then he gets high on his own supply, sure

I totally agree with this, but my point is that Caro style Moses as a wanna-be tyrant from the get-go, so it is not power that corrupts him, he was always morally corrupt, power just gave him the means to force his way upon everyone else. As per LBJ - I agree with your reading
22.02.2025 16:36 — 👍 0 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0
Caro is very clear in suggesting that the "idealistic reformer" phase stems from RM imitating his mother´s interest towards "public service". My understanding is that this was too a weak preference that he left aside as soon as power allowed him to pursue his true interests
22.02.2025 16:11 — 👍 1 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0
My feeling reading the PB was not that the accumulation of power corrupted RM, but rather that it allowed him to remove all the constraints that limited the expression of his will. So apparently the message is the same in both books
