This is like when Gorbachev cracked down on alcohol, there was so much private booze making that it caused a sugar shortage.

It tends to get underplayed in American historical imagination, but our Revolution was in a direct, conscious lineage from the Glorious Revolution and before that the English Civil Wars. The road to 1776 began outside the Banqueting House in 1649. We are, in that real sense, still Anglo-Americans.

this is literally stuff King Charles did, like not only did the American colonists have a revolution to not have this happen, but they did so in the wake of the English revolution, which was about not having stuff like this happen

This is all but literally one of the things that King James II did that led to the Glorious Revolution in 1688 and the English Bill of Rights in 1689. (Want to guess who used that document as a model in the 1770s and 1780s?)

Tariff revenue is operating like ship money did for Charles I, when he tried to rule England without Parliament. Like the US, only the legislature could legitimately tax the people, but Charles used innovative abuses of his powers to raise & spend money as he wanted

(He later lost his crown & head)

Charles I, who ruled from 1625 until he was executed in 1649, having been defeated in the English Civil War, which was caused by his violations of English law, such as levying taxes without the consent of Parliament and arbitrarily imprisoning people.

A civil war map of the city of Cairo, IL and Camp Defiance, with accompanying text that reads "Camp Defiance was commissioned in 1861 to provide defense against a potential attack from the Confederacy. A line of sentries was posted along the Mississippi River levee upstream 20 miles form Cairo. Boats were stopped and searched for goods being shipped south the to rebels. Forty pieces of artillery were in position and 5,000 men were being trained at the site. The Illinois Central Railroad stopped in Cairo and reportedly could provide 50,000 men in 24 hours' notice if provoked by the South."

Crazy to think someone in Pritzker's office has run tabletop exercises, some perhaps leading not just to standoffs in court but also on the I-55 bridge from MO to East St. Louis, w/ IL guard blocking TX guard.

Less likely, but perhaps more fitting, if that were to happen at Fort Defiance.

NEW: I'm listening in on a second new lawsuit out of Illinois today, addressing First Amendment freedoms surrounding protests, including press and religious claims.

Judge Sara Ellis, an Obama appointee, is hearing the TRO motion and has found the plaintiffs, for TRO purposes, have standing.

Per Seidel’s thread, Perry’s response to this was ordering a government response by Wednesday and hearing Thursday β€” over the objection of Illinois’s attorney, who argued that a TRO is needed now.

I thought I'd put the administration's proposed "compact" with universities in context, so I wrote the blog post below.

It's especially for journalists covering this story!

Many details about how the compact itself works and why the administration has retreated to this strategy.
