Here's the relevant section of law under which Trump is taking over DC's Metropolitan Police. It appears as though it will require an act of Congress (a joint resolution) for the takeover to extend beyond 30 days.

So now FBI agents are not only being reassigned to immigration enforcement, they’re also being reassigned to do the job of beat cops?

Not only does this mean it’s an increasingly good time to get away with federal crimes, but attrition at the FBI is going to go up again. Lot of early retirements.

It’s less about whether they like it/hate it than what they have any power to do. By law FBI agents can only arrest people for federal crimes or *felonies committed in their presence*. They can’t just turn into local police
