My own Mandela Effect: I can remember an old friend doing a dead-on impersonation of Hank Hill ... except that I knew this person in the early 1990s, before Hank Hill existed. What am I remembering??

This is a good, sturdy joke, of course. But what really makes it pop is that the image of Homer — seen from a slight distance, alone, on the curb, weeping into his hands — is genuinely sad. Which makes it funnier.

Today I learned that there are actual people who spend all their time online yet still pretend not to know that ChatGPT use is controversial.

People complain, "Oh, they taught us so much useless stuff in school! Why did I learn how to dissect a frog? I never do that." Well, who's stopping you? Grab one and see if you still know how. I bet you'd be surprised.

Hilarious (and sad), but also, I can see why being snubbed by Terry Gross would be such a big deal. She is supposed to be considering ALL things, not just the things she likes.

My prior GANDHI experience was watching it in 9th grade history class in 15-minute chunks spanning weeks. The only detail I remembered was that when Candice Bergen showed up Mr. Joyce our history teacher/gym coach said, "Class, that's Candice Bergen. She's the most beautiful woman in the world."

Well, GANDHI was everything I expected it to be. 191 minutes. Widescreen. Color. It has everything.

TOGETHER: Good 'n' icky love story/body horror about Dave Franco and Alison Brie getting too close. As usual, the grossness had been dramatically overstated by the time I saw it. I understand people have walked out or vomited or whatever, but those people were weak. Their bloodlines won't last.

THE NAKED GUN: I can’t remember the last time I:

- laughed this much in a theater
- had such high hopes for a movie
- wasn’t even a little let down

From the first scene (specifically, a sound effect of bowling pins) I knew they’d gotten it exactly right. Couldn’t have hoped for a better sequel.

Me old chum @brettm.bsky.social and I are doing a double feature tomorrow: THE NAKED GUN and TOGETHER — movies that both might be good! I can't remember the last time I watched two movies that were both good back-to-back in a theater.
