To be fair, if there’s one thing that would be truly improved by a blockchain system it would be DNS. So it’s not prima facie evident that such an effort is in bad faith.

Its a genuine exploration of self sovereign identity for us. The Handshake community has been experimenting with an open root namespace, backwards compatible with DNS, for several years now. For context, I’m an active HNS contribute and also run theshake.xyz, a Handshake news and data service.

Handshake is backwards compatible with DNS and we wanted to run a server as an experiment for the HNS community. We didn’t intend for it to get this much attention. Invites are to Stems are now closed.

In some cases the provider appends the domain name in the background so you have to put _atproto instead of _atproto.alice.com
