Students converge in Twin Cities to become gun violence prevention advocates In the wake of a deadly attack on Minnesota lawmakers, more than 100 volunteers with Students Demand Action will be on the University of Minnesota's Twin Cities campus this week to learn all about the power of advocating for gun violence prevention in politics.

Our young people shouldn’t know the trauma of gun violence. Yet, too often it shapes their reality. There’s no stronger call to action than the voices of our youth, standing up for a safer future they deserve. We must meet their courage with the urgent change this moment demands.

Rep. Melissa Hortman reflected the best of us all. She showed up for Minnesotans every day, embracing her role in public service with fervor and conviction. The legacy she leaves behind—one of generosity, collaboration, and humility—is ours to carry forward.

Tonight’s arrest gives us some semblance of relief—though nothing erases the pain and trauma of this devastating violence. The targeted murder of Rep. Melissa Hortman and her husband Mark, and shooting of Sen. John Hoffman and his wife Yvette, is nothing short of an act of evil. I am grateful for the relentless work of our law enforcement who brought this search to an end without further loss of life. Though this arrest is an important step in the search for answers, it’s far from the justice the Hortman and Hoffman families, and our community, deserve. I am praying for peace and comfort for both families, and wish the Hoffmans a speedy recovery.
