I am delighted to be working with Barnthorn Publishing to write my first book on the history of the 1940 Dunkirk Veterans’ Association.
Interested in objects as symbols of identity? Wanting to learn more about 2WW veteran identities? Check out this article by Harriet Beadnell: ‘The Only Time I Think I’m a Veteran is When I’m Dressed up’ – Medals as Symbols of Second World War Veteran Identity.

Delighted to see my article exploring how Britons planned for retirement in the mid-to-late 20th century out in the world! It tries to capture the mixed feelings prompted by ageing & retirement whilst connecting those themes to wider histories of social democracy, selfhood & financialisation.
Delighted to see that my book Joining Up is published today, a mere 11 years after I started writing it. You can read it for free here: doi.org/10.7765/9781...

Thank you also for the info about records relating to pub owning ancestors. I am definitely going to try and find out more about my ancestors at the Wellington Inn in Bacup and the others.
I had a fantastic morning learning all about the historic pubs of York with @york.ac.uk Centre for Lifelong Learning at King’s Manor. Thank you to @joesaunders1.bsky.social for an informative and entertaining insight into the taverns, ale houses and inns of York through the ages.

I enjoyed sharing my research on the commemoration of El Alamein at #SAHR2025 @societyarmy.bsky.social conference in Leeds on Saturday. I have been inspired by so many fantastic papers. Thank you to the organisers for hosting such a well organised event.
Our 2025 Conference intends to provide an overview of all aspects of British soldiering, but also its development. Healthcare has come a long way in recent decades, and one of our panels demonstrates the impact of these changes on the British soldier of the 20th & 21st centuries
One of the last panels in our 2025 Research Conference, now only short weeks away, considers understandings of leadership and motivations in the years before, during, and after the #FWW. After all, what makes people actually fight, and what keeps them in the fight, is essential to military life
So good from Joe Moran here on family history, voice and the unrecorded.
Thank you :)
