Our work suggests that user awareness about deceptive designs alone is not enough to protect consumers and that regulations still have a large part to play to protect users against online manipulative designs.

Summary: a (rather simple) AI bot can not only successfully evade survey-level protections, it can also mimic personas accurately across questions, parse photos/videos, and infer the researcherβs hypotheses to produce data that confirms them.

Our new research paper just posted! It asks whether dark patterns (manipulative online interfaces) can thwart users who are trying to make privacy-protective choices on a video streaming site. papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.... We find that dark patterns are very potent even when users have that goal.
