Word 365's grammar checker suggested I change "After this is done, you assholes are buying me a new one" to "After this is done, your assholes are buying me a new one."
Okay this one had me cracking up. #editorlife #amediting

Closeup of crocheted lacey pattern with repeated fan-like motifs.
I may be late for #showMeYourKnits lace but am slowly working on this shawl. I didn't think I'd be able to manage this thin yarn but am very happy to find I could! #crochet ๐งถ

Ha first time as an editor that I've encountered a non-breaking hyphen in the text. Impressed that the authors took the time to use it. #AmEditing #Edibuddies

Grammarly's presentation of something they call Expert Review, including my name (plus Stephen King's, plus Mary Norris's), though to be sure I've never been contacted by Grammarly, much less compensated.
What in the absolute fuck is this.

Text on an academic article about "Moving Things: Moving Cartloads of Treasures from Venice to Ethiopia, ca. 1400" pasted into Grammarly in a Browser. It offers to invoke the digital ghosts of David Abulafia, Barry Flood and Chris Wickham to give me "expert feedback".
Using Grammarly for the first time in forever ... WHAT?
As a non-native speaker writing primarily in English, I used to use it to check prepositions, point out too long/convoluted sentences etc.
It now offers to summon colleagues both living and dead to "expert review" the piece???
What?

- contextualized ("a contextualized overview")
I understand the intent behind the word, but I find it meaningless. Is it possible to create an overview (in this example) that does not consider context? #AmEditing #PlainLanguage

When writing alt text, ask yourself if you would picture an approximation of the image if it was described to you over the phone using the alt text you've written. Doing that exercise can be a good way to determine if you're on the right track.

Google Ngrams: Democrat-appointed, Democratic-appointed, 1800-2022
"Democrat-appointed" sounds more natural to me than "Democratic-appointed" and Perplexity agreed, but N-gram shows that "Democratic-appointed" is more commonly used. Recognizing what to check and where is one of the many skills editors need ๐ก #AmEditing #Edibuddies books.google.com/ngrams/graph...

It was line editing but I ended up having to check a lot of internal discrepancies - so flipping back and forth and guessing what they may have intended and suggesting solutions took a lot of brain power ๐ช ๐

The papyrus is decorated with line drawings in black ink. Osiris is sitting on a throne, wearing the double crown of Egypt and holding a crook and flail as a symbol of royalty. In front of him is a large lotus flower with deities standing on top, and behind him a papyriform column. Along the top of the papyrus are some hieroglyphs and two rows of seated underworld deities. At the very top is a row of stars.
Osiris on his throne in the Hall of Judgement. Detail, just a few cm tall, from the Book of the Dead. The papyrus is broken where it was rolled up, and the fragments had slipped inside the glass, so I realigned them in Photoshop

Please no comments on the vileness of genAI ๐ I understand the many reasons why *not* to use genAI. But I also feel that blanket condemnation of genAI use is a privilege of those of us who grew up with English. We are simply lucky that English is the de facto common language.
