I always wondered if they considered Billy Connolly (who eventually appeared in the films as Dain Ironfoot). In the 1990s he did an ad filmed in NZ dressed as a wizard and it seemed like a screen test. I think he could have pulled it off, but hard to envision with McKellen's performance imprinted.

I am hoping to hop on and attend the finale show live, urghh-nurghle in hand! a beaten yet unbowed grizzled veteran of Season 7.
