I understand & thank you for telling me so I can use more inclusive language. 💯 You bring up a great point about commodification & how that can taint art if it’s purely for monetary gain.

I have been thinking of the commodification of art too-under capitalism I find it unavoidable. ‘Art for art’s sake,’ as I create my art without profiting fiscally off it, but nevertheless it can be a gift to provide for yourself & family through your artistic passion if you can or want to.

Thx 4 sharing! 2 things can exist & be true. ‘Consumed’ as a negative/positive connotation is based upon ur definition. It’s not negative for me. Food can be art, & it’s consumed, quite literally, but doesn’t take away from experiencing the art. Good to enjoy art whether it’s a commodity or not.

Make art that you think is fuckin sick as hell. Make the shit you never thought you could that you always wanted to see. Beat your insecurity to death and fight to become your own favorite artist.

These are just ideas to spark your imagination of how you can show vs. tell. Rewiring your brain to think like this can be so helpful as a writer, so I wanted to share! Happy Writing! 🫶🫶

Items can also be powerful. Does your MC wear their siblings jacket bc it makes them feel close to them? Does your sibling carry around a photo of them that just happens to fall out of their wallet or pocket? What happens if they also lose said item? (5)

Why is this so powerful? Readers, most likely, have experienced grief. On my loved one’s birthday, I like to eat their favorite food or do something they loved to do bc it’s a way to honor them. This is emotional, this can help connect your protagonist to your reader and make them care. (4)

Dialogue from merchant: “has it already been another year?” OR “[sibling’s name] used to get the same one.] (thus creating intrigue for the reader). Then you could add a sentence of ‘tell’ if you wanted. But right off the bat ‘telling’ isn’t compelling for readers. (3)

One way to do that is to make it the anniversary of the sibling’s disappearance or their birthday, where the MC performs a tradition or ritual to remember the person. Dialogue can help ‘show’ too. MC purchases food object from a merchant. (2)

If the disappearance of the sibling is a plot point, don’t just tell the readers right off the bat. You have to build suspense, tension & intrigue. A way to do that is show the MC’s actions that indicate the loss of the sibling. (1)
