How Fossil Fuel Money Made Climate Change Denial the Word of God Splinter is your home for news and opinions that challenge power in our political and economic system that's becoming more unhinged each and every day.

"Conservative groups, funded by fossil fuel magnates, spend $1B/yr interfering with public understanding of what is happening to our world. Few investments rival the return they've gotten from evangelicals."

An oldie but goodie makes the link between fossil fuels, climate denial, and U.S. religion.

Another thing: if we've only managed to cut real emissions by 4% since 2005, how do you think we're getting the rest of the way to 62-70% by 2035 with the same weak policies?
The land-use accounting tricks that got us to -28% aren't yielding any more.

Relying on ChatGPT to teach you about a topic leaves you with shallower knowledge than Googling and reading about it, according to new research that compared what more than 10,000 people knew after using one method or the other.

If you’re a journalist who’s still on Twitter, from now on in your writing you have to replace β€œthe American people want” with β€œtroll bots in Eastern Europe demand”

Being there makes your judgment suspect. I don’t care how savvy you think you are, you’re marinating in a disinformation campaign.

Northern Australia is extraordinary, and it’s under severe threat Right now, this region, is under siege, in large part due to insatiable corporate and government desires to β€˜develop’ the North.

I love Northern Australia, and it breaks my heart what's happening and is planned for this region. More people need to know why this place is so special and what's at risk, so I wrote about it. My first article for @australiainstitute.org.au's The Point. thepoint.com.au/opinions/251...

Nearly 30 countries refuse to sign a final #COP30 agreement that doesn't include "fossil fuel phase-out," as negotiations head into overtime.

Last year, we advocated for marine wildlife at a series of stakeholder engagement sessions that helped decide what would be included in this plan. We also encouraged supporters to have their say. The results were loud and clear: on average, 90% of people agreed with the NSW EPA's proposed actions.

i just read something about grief from C.S. Lewis and his book, β€œA Grief Observed”

basically, when someone you love dies, it isn’t just them that you miss, but the parts of yourself that person brought out of you that can never be brought out again.

i feel that with my dad.

And we knew this. This wasn't speculation. We studied it, we had the talking points. We trained volunteers to explain this to people. It's not a surprise. Rich people don't flee places with good quality of life when we increase the quality of life. They might try to cheat us, but they don't leave.

Friendly reminder that dishwashers made after 1995 or so are so water and energy efficient that even if you ran them twice fully loaded it would still use less water than handwashing the same load.

So many "green" things feel like sacrifices. Dishwashers are not one of them.
