Cold tolerance estimates for the Rio Cauca Caecilian (Typhlonectes natans), a novel amphibian invader in the USA Thermal tolerance can reveal the risk of establishment and spread for non-native tropical species introduced to more subtropical regions. These data are particularly important for novel introductions ...

Caecilians maintain a functional long-wavelength-sensitive cone opsin gene despite signatures of relaxed selection and more than 200 million years of fossoriality The colonization of low-light environments exerts selective pressure to enhance non-visual senses while relaxing selection on vision, often leading to opsi

An overview of the postcranial osteology of caecilians (Gymnophiona, Lissamphibia) Caecilians comprise a relatively small (~220 species) group (Gymnophiona) of snake-like or worm-like, mostly tropical amphibians. Most adult caecilians are fossorial, although some species may live i....

Two coral snakes caught in rare food fight over caecilian In the wild, where snakes can disperse more easily, it's far less common to see them risk a dangerous fight over a meal.

The most exciting find of my recent fieldwork: the Montane MahΓ© Caecilian. Only found on the highest peak in Seychelles, this Critically Endangered amphibian had not been observed since 2015.

πŸ‡ΈπŸ‡¨ Seychelles has 8 endemic caecilian species. Seven of them can all be found in Morne Seychellois National Park on MahΓ© island. These limbless amphibians are highly understudied due to their underground burrowing lifestyle. However, the difficulty makes finding one very rewarding!

Research 2025 #YearInReview πŸ’§ Biologists found an amphibian called a caecilian hiding away in a Florida canal in 2019. The species is native to South America, but a recent study by Coleman Sheehy and team show that they're now firmly established in Florida.

Here's a Nakon Si Thammarat Caecilian (Ichthyophis supachaii), observed in a shallow rivulet near a forest trail in peninsular Thailand, 2023. Caecilians are amphibians, & generally live underground, although there are some completely aquatic species. #herps #caecilians #NaturePhotography 🌿

The Second Species of Caecilian in China <p indent="0mm">A new unstriped Ichthyophis is found in Yunnan, China, it is distinguished from its unstriped congeners in morphology by a combination of characters including HL (head length), the number of annuli (369–372), vertebrae (114), inner mandibular teeth (36) and premaxillary-maxillary (51). The new species is also distinguished from its closest neighbour congener by a significant genetic divergence which is greater than 5.8% in the mitochondrial COI gene and greater than 6.3% in the mitochondrial cyt-b gene. As the first unstriped Ichthyophis species found in China, it is also the second species of Caecilians (Amphibian: Gymnophiona) found in China.</p> <?Pub Caret 25?>

Happy New Year #caecilian lovers!

There’re 224 species of caecilian (Gymnophiona) as of 31/DEC/2024 according to @AmphibiaWeb

Of the 88 new species of amphibians in 2024, just 2 were caecilians. Encouraging naturalists to get out there and dig; new species are waiting for you!
