'CAR'-Tastrophe: Big Tech is Secretly Behind Hochul's Auto Insurance Rate Cut Push - Streetsblog New York City Is Uber really interested in a more affordable New York?

Big tech companies like Uber have been spending big to deregulate auto insurance in New York state, at the expense of crash victims, and Gov. Hochul is pushing their cause in the name of "affordability." nyc.streetsblog.org/2026/01/22/c...

Gov. Hochul's Uber-Backed Car Insurance 'Reforms' Threaten Payouts To Crash Victims - Streetsblog New York City Hochul wants to limit payouts to crash victims under the banner of "affordability" and claims that "staged crashes" drive up insurance rates.

Gov. Hochul is pushing an Uber-backed proposal to make it harder for car crash victims to receive compensation for their injuries under the guise of affordability — and with the support of the new mayor.

fwiw i think the tracker is not being received with the level of hostility you perceive. DOT told us they thought it was funny.

Unlicensed Drivers Comprise One-Quarter Of Street Fatalities: Data - Streetsblog New York City Unlicensed drivers are now responsible for one-quarter of road fatalities — and are linked to fatal crashes much more often now than pre-pandemic, a new Streetsblog analysis shows.

Unlicensed drivers killed nearly 300 pedestrians, cyclists and motorists on city streets between 2021-2024 — and their percentage share of the carnage soared in the aftermath of the coronavirus pandemic, new city data analyzed by Streetsblog shows.

One of the biggest tells of how blatantly screwed up medicine's mishandling of chronic illnesses is comes from physicians who end up suffering from them pretty much all saying that it's nothing like what they were taught it's like and no one else in the profession is bothered by that.

thanks for flagging. we will discuss.

Understood. We may add "yet" to this in response to your feedback.

Believe it or not there are people who want us to go to war with the mayor NOW over Bedford Ave. All we're doing with this tracker is saying that we haven't forgotten about that and other projects/initiatives killed by Adams.

12.01.2026 17:53 — šŸ‘ 1    šŸ” 0    šŸ’¬ 0    šŸ“Œ 0

Respectfully, I don't agree. It's just a tracker, not a missile. No mayor is perfect and I imagine this one appreciates having a list of every fuck-up of his predecessor to hold himself accountable to.

12.01.2026 17:51 — šŸ‘ 0    šŸ” 0    šŸ’¬ 2    šŸ“Œ 0

i do feel that this is not a becoming way to speak to other humans. i know our approach can be polarizing but you are basically calling me stupid and i don't understand why.

Please try to understand that we are well-intended and just trying to hold the mayor accountable. We take your feedback seriously but the level of vitriol we're getting for this is uncalled for.

12.01.2026 16:14 — šŸ‘ 1    šŸ” 0    šŸ’¬ 1    šŸ“Œ 0

Why did I even bother trying to explain if you are going to respond in such bad faith? A new mayoral administration started and we had a discussion about how to handle things differently this time.

12.01.2026 16:11 — šŸ‘ 0    šŸ” 0    šŸ’¬ 2    šŸ“Œ 0

It's not negative framing to be occasionally disappointed by the mayor! It's just something that happens! No one at DOT or City Hall has complained. We reset the counter last week because of NYPD, which I'm sure they would also like to see the mayor rein in.

12.01.2026 16:07 — šŸ‘ 0    šŸ” 0    šŸ’¬ 1    šŸ“Œ 0

Streetsblog is not going to be less critical of the mayor just because suddenly it's someone all our readers think is their boyfriend

The thought here was: we are keeping this list anyway, why not share it with our readers?
