And to be perfectly honest, I'm good at some things but I suck at a lot of it. I'm a piece of the puzzle, though. The picture only appears if everyone shows up, and everything we do amplifies the work of the rest.

It can be clumsy work. We're rebuilding a hamstrung system of labor in America, and I wish it was more mature for what we're facing. But it's what we have. It's fighting alongside people you might not even like. But we can't just react and mobilize and disperse. We have to build power.

In times when the state threatens basically everything that defines my family and gives our lives meaning, all I've got is worker power. We control our labor, and through coordination and building our own power, we can take precise action against the powers that oppress us.

I can fantasize about not having a day job and just drawing comics from home all day, and I would not miss working for soulless corporations, BUT I've cultivated a lot of skills for building worker power in an office and I'm not ready to give that up

I'm so comics-brained that my writing feels incomplete until I start visualizing it, introducing that friction that refines the form. It's not unlike when I would GM TTRPGs. My prep and writing weren't complete on their own, they needed to be interpreted and played with by the players.

I think that, even though I'm a clumsy artist, drawing is a powerful practice because it helps clarify what I find important. It can surprise me and refine an idea by narrowing my scope. It can also scare me by showing me how much I hadn't considered, and make me struggle against my ignorance.

I read this last night and it rips!!! Such a tasty story of entwined rivals that also navigates the material struggles of being a pro athlete. The author's passion for women's figure skating jumps off the page, and there's at least one real world nod that put a tear in my eye. RIVALS!!!!!!!!!! 🔥🔥
