Taking this as a sign from the world that I needed this time of forced hibernation to finally come back stronger in the spring and be around more.
*Last link I posted wasnβt working! But my ability to work has been limited and I will post my link if you can spare it-

Well, Iβm 11% dumber for having read that.
04.03.2026 00:50 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0I literally start blood feuds with other writers who canβt be bothered writing scripts, but still want a graphic novel with their name on it.

Direct Market Publishers: We REALLY want the next Locke & Key. We need it! Weβre horny for it!
Me: Great, Iβve got a book for you. Itβs a 12 issue YA horror β
Direct Market Publishers: Say less!! β¦But can you do it in one five issue mini series?
Me:
1. Good for Lemire! Get that bag!
2. Harper Alley alienating several PoC creators over the past year and then turning around and offering a white man a 5 book deal (while telling PoCβs that thereβs no money for multi book deals) is certainly a look.
Fuck off with this horrible take, Brett. Fuck the βsoulβ of the GI Joe franchise.
Max Landis, like his father, is an unrepentant piece of shit and should not be allowed back. But letβs make it about the βsoulβ of precious toy line turned media franchise from tour childhood.
Fuck all the way off!
Realizing that Iβve been dragging my feet when outlining the last half of Pok-Ta-Pok vol 3 because Iβm not ready to part ways with these four absolute menaces yet.

Hyeondo and I got on the same page and I emailed the editor and declined their offer of publication.
I hadnβt been published yet and I still walked away from an obvious bullshit deal.
That's the person I've been from day one.
I had a conversation with Hyeondo about it. The conversation was NOT weighing the pros/cons of what First Comics requested. But instead it was me asserting to Hyeondo that I will not allow some editor to tell him how to draw our book and that I wanted to pass on the offer.
26.02.2026 22:07 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0They liked the book! Everything was going great until they suggested to me) that Hyeondo (Veda artist) should draw "differently". They gave me some examples to pass on to Hyeondo.
26.02.2026 22:07 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0My first brush with a potential publisher was First Comics. They were making a comeback in the early 2010's, I pitched them what would become VEDA: Assembly Required.
26.02.2026 22:07 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0There's this perception that because I have a Printz Award that the award gave me the assurance I needed to walk away from Harper Collins. Not true in the slightest. I've been walking away from bullshit publishing terms long before I was published.

If you are signing a contract with any publisher, talk to your rep about negotiating limitations on the option clause.
This does NOT create ill-will between you and publisher or the acquiring editor.
Wide open option clauses ONLY benefit the publisher, not you.
If you ever want a blurb from me for Gutless, consider this a standing offer for that.

The first teaser for Jane Schoenbrunβs Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma is here π
Starring Hannah Einbinder and Gillian Anderson. In theaters August 7.
Cover art for βBrownstoneβ by Samuel Teer & Mar Julia. A massively oversized figure of a young girl with wavy dark hair reclines against a Brooklyn brownstone, as if it were a desk. The colour scheme is muted earth tones.
I read βBrownstoneβ by Samuel Teer & Mar Julia. In this YA coming of age graphic novel, a young teenager spends the summer with the Guatemalan father she never knew, renovating a Brooklyn brownstone and connecting with her heritage.
I loved it!

There are two wolves inside of me, one wolf wants to help you make comics.
The other is the laziest wolf that has ever lived.
Sometimes Iβll think, βI should start a patreon and post scripts so people can see how I work and they might find that helpful.β
That thought is often followed by this thought, βThat sounds like a LOT of extra work.β
Work with Ben! It guarantees that I will buy your book!!
23.02.2026 20:50 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Congrats to Ryan Coogler and Wunmi Mosaku on their wins at BAFTA for "Sinners". Special congrats to Mr. Coogler for being the first Black man to win Original Screenplay.

20.02.2026 21:12 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0A4: Brownstone by Samuel Teer is one of my favorite graphic novels to share with my middle schoolers! Although it is super deep, it is also so sweet and lighthearted and a great lesson in understanding. (Featured is my signed copy that @katemessner.com brought me back from ALA25!) #TLSkyChat

My updated '26 blurb policy.
If we know each other or have a mutual acquaintance? I MIGHT blurb your book.
If I do not know you personally, chances are extremely low (but not zero) that I will blurb your book.
If your book is published by Harper Collins, there's not a snowball's chance in hell.
