Realizing that I’ve been dragging my feet when outlining the last half of Pok-Ta-Pok vol 3 because I’m not ready to part ways with these four absolute menaces yet.

Hyeondo and I got on the same page and I emailed the editor and declined their offer of publication.

I hadn’t been published yet and I still walked away from an obvious bullshit deal.

That's the person I've been from day one.

I had a conversation with Hyeondo about it. The conversation was NOT weighing the pros/cons of what First Comics requested. But instead it was me asserting to Hyeondo that I will not allow some editor to tell him how to draw our book and that I wanted to pass on the offer.

They liked the book! Everything was going great until they suggested to me) that Hyeondo (Veda artist) should draw "differently". They gave me some examples to pass on to Hyeondo.

My first brush with a potential publisher was First Comics. They were making a comeback in the early 2010's, I pitched them what would become VEDA: Assembly Required.

There's this perception that because I have a Printz Award that the award gave me the assurance I needed to walk away from Harper Collins. Not true in the slightest. I've been walking away from bullshit publishing terms long before I was published.

If you are signing a contract with any publisher, talk to your rep about negotiating limitations on the option clause.

This does NOT create ill-will between you and publisher or the acquiring editor.

Wide open option clauses ONLY benefit the publisher, not you.

Bat Eater and Other Names for Cora Zeng by Kylie Lee Baker is haunting, paranoid and utterly potent. I tore through it in a couple of days and immediately reread it a second time. It's easily tied with Salem's Lot as one of my favorite horror novels.
