Did you know that the bees that need saving are NOT honeybees?

Honeybees are the dairy cows of bees. People brought them over from Europe to make us honey.

The problem with honeybees, esp in resource-limited ecosystems (like hey! cities!) is that they compete with our native bees for food.

H.A. Brown Elementary School Mural By Skype a Scientist

Had our first group meeting yesterday with the H.A. Brown Principal & Nick (the artist!)

The school is psyched. I'm going to talk about pollinators next week, & have the kids vote on their favorite bug!

We have a wall!
We have a plan!
We just need a little more funding πŸ˜…

Things are still scary and uncertain here in Minnesota but the community is strong and so is our love

Portraits in pain: seeing myself through migraines. Surrounded by polaroids of migraine drawings I have made over my lifetime

I’ve been drawing my migraines since I was a child and decided to put them altogether to talk about my history with migraines and how many others are also affected by this invisible disability 🧡

It sure sounds like it!! But i too put up with a lot simply because I don’t know any differently. So I understand. But almost daily head pain is not normal! There are medications out there that can help you, and identifying your pain as migraines is the first step to getting help.

You definitely have migraines. Severity has nothing to do with it. My chronic migraines are very low severity (thanks to medication) but still take a significant toll on my quality life. Living with a near constant pain, even if mild, is hell. And is disabling.

If your headaches include additional symptoms like brain fog, dizziness, nausea, they’re migraines! Thats all the requirement for a migraine, headache with additional symptoms. You don’t need light and sound sensitivity to have a migraine, it’s just the most common. But thank you. πŸ«‚

Are you part of the 1.16 billion who suffer from this neurological disease? Leave a comment below.

But please, keep your advice to yourself.

It’s not wanted, unless it’s specifically asked for. <3

One of my biggest pet peeves when speaking about migraines is the unsolicited advice. So please keep it to yourself unless asked. But sharing experiences is always welcome 🫢 4/4

Often I draw myself holding my head and rubbing my eyes, a tell I have, or am developing, a migraine.

My pain is typically centered behind one eye, with intense pressure that makes an ice pick lobotomy sound unreasonably good.

Top portrait features a women holding her head in her hands, pushing the skin back around her eyes and temple.

Bottom portrait features a similar position, but instead a small blade is stuck in the corner of her, with blood shot eyes, and blood dripping down and an open mouth, either in agony or relief.

Growing up there were more says where I was absent from school than present. Migraine left me chained to my bed.

Because of this, my bed is commonly found in my portraits, alongside a lack of clothes β€” symbolizing how vulnerable my pain makes me feel.

Top portrait is a top down view of a woman in fetal position on a bed Wearing only underwear and a bra. Color is mostly lacking, almost grayscale.

Bottom portrait features a woman in a fetal position on a bed, but this time from a straight on perspective. Her skin bruised and sickly, face hidden, but alive with color.

All 5 portraits arranged on the left hand side in chronological order.

While I now experience pain-free days, migraine still shapes a signifcant portion of my life.

My body is genetically pre-disposed to signal to me something is wrong via a migraine.

Even if that β€œsomething is wrong” is as insignificant as a change in the weather.

Ive lived an entire lifetime in pain, all due to a few differences in my genes.

This has made it hard for me to separate who I am, and who migraine makes me out to be.

Unfortunately, disabilities are still highly stigmatized in academia. But i have always seen it as the reason behind my success.

Migraines gave me my resiliency. They have taught me to never give up in the face of failure, to always advocate for myself, and to never be ashamed of needing help.

They’ve given me an excellent ability in time management, but more importantly, gratitude for the days that are joyful and carefree.

Drawing my migraines was a way for me to not only distract myself from my pain, but to make an invisible illness visible. Often accompanying body horror as I wanted to reflect how my insides felt on the outside. 3/4

Migraine is a neurological disease that is strongly rooted in genetics. Meaning more often than not, the reason behind your migraines is because of he genes you inherited from your mother and father.

1.16 billion people suffer from migraine and it is the second most common cause of disability. Chronic migraine, defined by 15 or more migraines a month, affects 830 million people.

I have had chronic migraines since I was a child. It went undiagnosed until i was about 15 years old. This is primarily because migraine can show differently in children than adults.

For me, I suffered from abdominal migraines, which was moderate to severe stomach pain with associated symptoms like nausea and headache. But we didn’t know this information when I was a child, and instead I was labeled as attention seeking.

My chronic migraines shaped my entire life and bled into my view of my self. From a young age i would draw my pain to make visible what was invisible. Like this portrait from age 12

Portrait of a woman rubbing her eyes and holding her head with lesions over her skin, bloodshot eyes, dark veins, and bruised under eyes.

I am never going to get over the fact thar so many Americans died that corpses stacked up in nursing homes and hospital morgues, that refrigerator trucks had to be brought in for the overflow, and that the big takeaway from Important Pundits is there should have been *less* mitigation.
