I miss old vhs boxes. So I took characters from our Gunsmoke campaign and turned it into one! Thought it’d be fun to make a few based on story beats.

I got a chuckle out of James going over to the wheelchair (gotta have one, it's required in every entry!) and he rips a handlebar off it as a makeshift weapon. It was like 'sure, whatever works!'

What's funny is that's game accurate. He leaves his flashlight on in the game as well XD

Yeah and from interviews, he shows he loves these games. I also think he did a great job with the first film. Reportedly his next project is a Fatal Frame movie, so that'll be interesting.

The JPN Fatal Frame movie is hated b/c it has little to do with the games, but it's a good movie overall.

It's one of those 'the heart was in the right place, but this could've been done better' situations. I wonder how much of it was based on wanting to play with the well-worn material, and how much was 'well we have to do this or the fans will be mad', and I could see how it instead upset everyone lol

LOL yeaaaah there were a LOT of sponsors at the beginning. That was really weird. Kinda reminded me of End of Evangelion, where they have like a dozen production company logos play at the intro. Unlike EoE though, I suspect the RtSH ones were a lot pushier with demands.

I could see the film's interpretations of the names and Pyramid Head being too on-the-nose. It could easily be seen as cheesy. But I also wasn't surprised whatsoever, since I could see those revelations being valid interpretations of the game's relationships between James, Mary and the others.

I've seen fan interpretations of the games that suggest that Angela and Laura are different aspects of Mary's psyche, and Eddie is one of James', alongside Pyramid Head. It's notable that James and Eddie look vaguely similar in the game, and also in the movie.

Oh btw, they did not need to give the spider lady so much cake, but I'm not complaining lol!

They toned down Pyramid Head and the Nurses' sexiness from the first movie (ironically, given the themes), but they instead gave a spider lady monster a huge ass. It's quite something XD

I'd suggest not to hop on the hate bandwagon and maybe give it a shot if you're a fan of the game, but just go in expecting it to not be a 1:1 remake, but more of a remix. I never saw Revelation, but reviews overall say this is better than that, but not as good as the first, and that seems accurate.

Would I say it's a bad film? No. Would I say it's a bad Silent Hill film? No. Would I say it's incredible? Absolutely no, lol. I think the first movie is one of the best videogame adaptations, and this one is more of an average film. Lots of great creatures and some cool scenes, but a muddled story.

I would say my biggest issues with the movie are how it is trying to appease fans of the game while also trying to appeal to average movie-goers, so it has a lot of scenes from the game in there, but done in such a way it would leave non-fans confused. Therefore the pacing/plot is really messy.

The movie is also aware of how revered the game is, and the director is a vocal fan of the series, so he tries to incorporate a lot of recognizable scenes and elements of the game in there, but also wants to rework the Mary/James relationship to flesh it out more, and it results in messiness.

So, as I said this is more of a remix than a straight up adaptation. I know hardcore fans are INCENSED about how this isn't a 1:1 remake of the game, but the first film wasn't like that for SH1 either. Like that movie, this one takes elements but rearranges things, expands on the cult more, etc.

Music wise I know Akira Yamaoka returned for this, but unlike the first film which was just wall-to-wall cuts directly from the games, this one features ambient music until the second half, where familiar themes from SH2 return, but they're more like re-arrangments. I would've liked more game music.

Acting wise, it's pretty stilted or just average. There's really no big names in here, and it really throws me that James doesn't look (or really act) at all like his game counterpart. Maria looks like a cosplayer at first but the more she gets dirtied up, the more she fits with the film's visuals.

I liked the visuals, though some choices were not ones I would've made. It also heavily focuses on practical FX and monster suits, with CGI mostly being reserved for insect swarms, ash/fog, fire and debris, etc. The set design is disgustingly impressive, as well.

So, all in all I thought it was decent. Not great, but not atrocious like everyone is making it out to be. Three things I kept in mind was that 1) this is a much lower budgeted film than the first, 2) like the first, it's more of a remix of the games, and 3) only a few key crew returned.
