Absolutely breathtaking!

We can't get enough of these snow-covered photos of Northumberland National Park. This amazing photo was snapped by ranger Sally whilst on footpath patrol with ranger Oscar near Alnham.

25 years of wader declines This article summarises a Bird Study paper arising from a 25-year Scottish study of breeding Lapwing, Oystercatcher, Redshank & Curlew. The story is set against a backdrop of a changing farmingโ€ฆ

Birdwatchers who are under 40 will not appreciate just how many breeding waders there were in Scottish farmland back in 1990.
If your benchmark is 2015, look at what happened in the previous 25 years:

The onslaught of big business capitalism is getting me down, so thought I'd do a very short thread of things I recommend that are on sale today.

Studies show how the giant statues on Rapa Nui were made and movedโ€”and what caused the island's deforestation Rapa Nui, also known as Easter Island, is often portrayed in popular culture as an enigma. The rationale is clear: The tiny, remote island in the Pacific features nearly 1,000 enormous statuesโ€”the moa...

Yes, Jared Diamond was wrong.

Rapa Nui's people did not suffer ecological and social collapse. They adapted to changed circumstances and thrived.

And they were nothing like "primitive"

As I'm planning next years field season, I wonder if anyone on here would like to run a small island project on Skรบvoy with me. I will be catching and samling great skuas, but there will be good opportunities to investigate other aspects of seabird island ecology ๐ŸŒ๐Ÿงช #seabirds

Have you ever seen a bike lane sweeper - pulled behind a bike?

Volunteers in Kirkland have a new tool that attaches to the back of an e-bike. It's good for protected bike lanes, sidewalks, and narrow trails.

- Eiffel 65
- A band I can't remember the name of but the keyboardist was the son of Benny or Bjorn from ABBA
- Miss Li

It's 'throw a baby puffin off a cliff' season in Iceland Young puffins have to leave their burrows alone, without the help of their parents, and find the ocean. Every year, local Icelanders set out to help.

Young pufflings almost need to fall off a cliff on their first flight.

I seem to recall, years ago, reading about a plan to reforest Highland glens by carpet-bombing them with tree saplings pushed out the back ramp of a Herculese. They would have a very pointy root plugs that would act as a ground penetrator, the tree itself acting as a stabilising drogue

The temp job, possibly the best ever, was typing in the Acquisitions Ledger, which I think started some time in the later 1800s. I got to put a huge dusty tome on a special cushion and type away while archivists occasionally showed me incredibly cool things they'd just found

I spent a winter temping at our county archives, which was brilliant, but I also found out there was a group called "Friends Of The County Archives" and another called "Real Friends Of The County Archives" and a big part of the archivists' job was making sure they never met
