IMHO Tartan Noir writers are the least likely to include Scots. They're working in a commercial genre for English speakers where the aim is to sell units &, given it's a global market, the setting is essentially irrelevant. It's about telling a good tale (in English) so that it can sell anywhere.

100% agree with the "English literature"/"literature in English" distinction.

What intrigues me with your examples is, do they include non-English languages? E.g. does the study of American literature include Spanish and native languages? Quite tricky for one person to teach, I'd imagine πŸ™‚

Re Hamlet, I think the equivalent analogy would be an English writer writing a play in Danish set in Denmark and then wondering why it's considered Danish literature.

You're right about RLS of course. True of all writers. Only they can produce their work, no one else πŸ™‚

Thanks πŸ‘

Scots is a leid in it's ain richt, o coorse. O thon Av nae dout.

I just think that if you write in English then you should expect others to consider your work to be a part of English literature.

And apologies if I've forgotten something obvious because I haven't read it for AGES but, based on the text alone, what's Scottish about The Strange Case of Dr Jeckyl and Mr Hyde? It's in English and it's set in London.

And Wikipedia tells me it was written in Bournemouth.

Re Burns, the title of "Poems, Chiefly In the Scottish Dialect" is

- in English
- "chiefly" suggests another language is present i.e. English
- "dialect" begs the question "Of which language?" i.e. English

If Scottish writers use someone else's language we shouldn't grumble if they "claim" us

it’s quite funny that my 15yo thinks the music being made now is the best music in the world and my 80yo dad thinks the best music in the world was made when *he* was 15, but the *actual* best music in the world, empirically, was made when *i* was 15. they both look so stupid lol

Still astonishing to me how a city like Glasgow - the birthplace of much great and important music - has TRNSMT as its big yearly music event. TRNSMT's the Brewdog of music festivals.

As he says, it's really personal preference. I'd swap out about 12 of those and move the others around, but it'd still be an excellent list.

Good to see Escher and YLITPWICF in there. I'd include What You Do To Me and December, but it starts getting Bandwagonesque-heavy.
