Hence the "virtuous lie": if such concepts did not exist, then it was a lie, but by perusing it, we turn a lie into a form of truth, neither fully real or actualized, but still real so long as we continue to pursue a better, "more perfect" version of them.

Are they? Or is it the combined human efforts that we engage in to pursue justice that makes such an arch?

The question is rhetorical. Neither exists without the other, but they are still human creation.

Is vengeance or restraint justice? There is no real answer, only what we decide it to be.

But the universe is cruel, dark, and full of horrors. We should not forget that these truths do not extend beyond our bonds, and so it is our responsibility to keep them real because it lose them is to lose ourselves.

Legal fictions are very real, it turns out!

We can call it the social contract or natural rights, or any number of other things, but they are the foundational lies, practically prayers to ourselves, that allow us to be better people than mere nature would allow.

And, in time, the lies become a form of truth, even if an artificial one.

So these lies, these fictions, are not real, but still load bearing in society. We treat them as real because we need guiding stars to remind us that we are not alone in the wilderness, and that we have duties to others.

They are lies we treat as true and attempt to make real because they bind us.

Bingo. This is exactly what I'm getting at.

One of the failures of the current political era has been to treat nature (nasty brutish and short) as some kind of utopian ideal, both on the right and left. They disposed of these essential lies and are bringing ruin.

And yet we treat the concepts as real, sometimes beyond our power, even in some forms as part of the universe itself.

Is that not a lie?

But it's a lie that allows us to be better, even if it is flawed, even if it is self-destructive, because these lies build up our community.

I feel the real failure of the latter Obama and Trump eras (the origins of which go back decades, but metastasized during that period) has been to allow these concepts to wither in exchange for pure self-interest, particularly in elite circles.

I'll give some credence to the virtuous lie: justice, honor, virtue, rights... these are things that are fundamentally man-made and must be maintained and pursued by us. They do not exist in nature, but are our own invention.

Yet they are important to us as, so we must make them true.
