Happy new year, angels. I can’t do my usual tradition of submerging myself in the Pacific, because it’s raining 😩 but I did spend this past weekend in the desert, which is another way to wash the gunk from my brain and bones.

I was feeling down because I couldn’t go back to Australia for Christmas, but then my mum called (where it’s already Christmas Day) and I chatted with her and my family, and now I feel less alone. Loved. Happy.

Today, as I filled my car with petrol, I was struck by two things:

1) Americans call it gas when it’s liquid. Which is weird. In Australia we have petrol AND gas, y’know?

2) They make you PAY to use the AIR? The AIR?!?! It’s AIR!!! I’M SURROUNDED BY AIR WHAT DO YOU MEAN

I was painting by my balcony door today* and I heard a crash - I looked up and a friggin’ squirrel was right in front of my face on the other side of the glass, staring at me. A HARBINGER OF DOOM?!

* I don’t do this often. I only started painting again recently, to Make Things.

I got my Californian license which meant today, for the first time ever in 8.5 years, I DROVE into Blizzard. I told anyone who would listen and was absolutely insufferable, asking if they wanted to see a photo of my car in the car park. All-caps online, yelping in person.

There’s construction going on at Blizzard atm. I was outside talking to a colleague when a dude in a truck with a tractor on the back drove past. He stopped and said “HEY, DO YOU GUYS MAKE VIDEO GAMES?”

“YEAH!” I yelled back.

“THAT’S SO COOL!” he said, then drove away.

He’s right.

It IS cool.

The comedy is one thing, but the storytelling chops on this man? The ability to make you feel and think? Otherworldly. He’s a master weaver. I am in awe - it’s like watching someone dance or paint a masterpiece, only it’s all words, all verbal. What an honor to witness, what a gift he is.

* Tried to vibe code an app that keeps track of pro wrestling storylines - ended up hurting my laptop and having to do a system reset, lmao.
* Played Vampire Survivors for the first time. The internet was right.

I got my California learners permit this week (I can drive in Australia, just not here…YET), and this may or may not come as a shock to you, but insurance companies are not super into insuring a car owned by a 41-year-old learner driver 😂
